John Bartlett (1820–1905). Familiar Quotations, 10th ed. 1919.

337 George Chapman 1559?-1634 John Bartlett

NUMBER:337
AUTHOR:George Chapman (1559?–1634)
QUOTATION:  Only a few industrious Scots perhaps, who indeed are dispersed over the face of the whole earth. But as for them, there are no greater friends to Englishmen and England, when they are out on ’t, in the world, than they are. And for my own part, I would a hundred thousand of them were there [Virginia]; for we are all one countrymen now, ye know, and we should find ten times more comfort of them there than we do here. 1
ATTRIBUTION:Eastward Ho. Act iii. Sc. 2.
WORKS:George Chapman Collection.

Note 1.
This is the famous passage that gave offence to James I., and caused the imprisonment of the authors. The leaves containing it were cancelled and reprinted, and it only occurs in a few of the original copies.—Richard Herne Shepherd. [back]
