Frank J. Wilstach, comp. A Dictionary of Similes. 1916.

Mark Akenside

Calm as the Judge of Truth.

Crouch’d like a slave.

Dark as the yawning grave.

Fair as virtuous friendship: as the candid blush of him who strives with fortune to be just.

Fierce as the flight of Jove’s destroying flame.

Firm as the solid base of this great world.

The tyrant from our shore, like a forbidden demon, fled.

Fled, like the raven from the bird of Jove.

Fluent as the skylark sings
When first the morn allures its wings.

Each mysterious form,
Flew like the pictures of a morning dream.

Loathsome as the briny sea to him who languishes with thirst.

Pall on the temper, like a twice told tale.

Swells as the poised ocean to the attracting moon obedient swells.

Swift as the lightning flash.

Unconfined as day.

Wealth vile, as the dross upon the molten gold.
