Frank J. Wilstach, comp. A Dictionary of Similes. 1916.

Alfred Austin

Barren as winter rain.

Bright as a beach in the moonlight.

As crimson as August heather.

Domestic as the night.

Droop, like to bees belated in the rain.

Florid as the Spring.

Frayed like fretted foam.

As free from artifice as is the dimple in childhood’s cheek.

Fresh as Fiumicino’s foam.

As idle as a dial when the sun
Sulks in the clouds.

Curving lips like wave half-furled.

Motionless as a babe asleep.

Pale as a moon that moves alone through lonely space.

Pink as the rose in Galatea’s cheek.

Radiant as morning.

Restless as the sea.

Sad as silence when a song is spent.

Sinews like a vine.

Steadfast as the steered-by star.

Tender as the midnight moon.

Tranquil as a star.

As wide as land.

Wise as Time and Silence are.
