St. Declan, First Bishop of Ardmore in Ireland
HE was baptized by St. Colman, and preached the faith in that country a little before the arrival of St. Patrick, who confirmed the episcopal see of Ardmore, in a synod at Cashel in 448.1 Many miracles are ascribed to St. Declan, and he has ever been much honoured in the viscounty of Dessee, anciently Nandesi. See Usher; Bosch the Bollandist, p. 590, and Colgan in MSS. ad 24 Julij.
Note 1. Ardmore (so called from its situation on an eminence) stands on the sea-coast, not far from the mouth of the river now called Broad-water or Black-water. The see was united to that of Lismore after the arrival of the English in Ireland; and this again to Waterford. See St. Carthags life, 14th May. [back]
