§ 7. Barrow.


Sir John Barrow was for forty years under-secretary to the admiralty, and distinguished himself as an enthusiastic supporter, and, also, as historian, of Arctic exploration. The tale of oriental travel is continued by Sir John Malcolm, who published anonymously an account of his second journey to Persia in 1810 as envoy to the shah from the East India company. He observes characters and renders eastern tales with much humour and insight. The delightful stories of Abdullah the peasant and of Ahmed the cobbler will bear the test of reading aloud.   22
