Mary Chilson

By George Bancroft Griffith (b. 1841)

FAIR beams that kiss the sparkling bay,

Rest warmest o’er her tranquil sleep;

Sweet exile! love enticed aways—

The first on Plymouth Rock to leap!

Among the timid flock she stood,

Rare figure near the May-Flower’s prow,

With heart of Christian fortitude,

And light heroic on her brow!

O ye who round King’s Chapel stray,

Forget the turmoil of the street;

Though loftier names are round her, lay

A wreath of flowers at Mary’s feet!

Though gallant Winslows slumber here,

E’en worthy Lady Andros too,

Her memory is still as dear,

And poets’ praise to Mary due.
