Avignon

The Wine of Avignon

By Francesco Redi (1626–1697)

(From Bacchus in Tuscany)
Translated by Leigh Hunt

GODS my life, what glorious claret!

Blessed be the ground that bare it!

’T is Avignon. Don’t say a flask of it;

Into my soul I pour a cask of it!
