Alfred H. Miles, ed. Women Poets of the Nineteenth Century. 1907.

By Horæ Amoris: Songs and Sonnets (1903). III. At the Piano

Rosa Newmarch (1857–1940)

“Sweet airs that give delight and hurt not.”

PLAY me some sober tune of long ago:

A minuet of Lulli, stately sweet,

Or march of Handel, strong in rhythmic beat,

Wherein no tides of passion come and go.

For, dearest, if you plunge my soul again

In those dark waters, turbulent and deep,

Of Schumann’s anguish, I must surely weep

Fresh tears into that bitter sea of pain.
