Henry Charles Beeching, ed. (1859–1919). Lyra Sacra: A Book of Religious Verse. 1903.

By Felicia Dorothea Hemans (1793–1835)

De Profundis

O FATHER, 1 in that hour
When Earth all succouring power
    Shall disavow;
When spear and shield and crown
In faintness are cast down;        5
    Sustain us Thou!

By Him who bowed to take
The death-cup for our sake,
    The thorn, the rod;
From whom the last dismay        10
Was not to pass away;
    Aid us, O God!

Note 1. Mrs Hemans, née Browne, is remembered now chiefly by one or two lyrics such us “The Better Land,” and “The Homes of England,” which have been set to music. She was a very fluent writer, and wrote with genuine feeling, but her style and sentiment are now old-fashioned. [back]
