February 25

Wallenstein’s Death

By Owen Meredith (1831–1891)

  • A celebrated Austrian general in the Thirty Years’ War. He was murdered by some of his own officers on Feb. 25, 1634.

  • WHEN Richelieu learned that Wallenstein was dead,

His thin face sharpened to an edge. He said,

“Soon as the great tree falls, the rabble run

To strip him of his branches one by one.”
