Encounter

Helen Hoyt

From “In a Certain City”

I HELD a violet in my hand

In the midst of the city,

And could not understand

My own pity.

Now was face to face

Littleness with the immensity of towers:

Strength was looking at grace;

The city sighing for lost woodland hours.
