Fossil

Janet Loxley Lewis

From “Cold Hills”

I FOUND a little ancient fern

Closed in a reddish shale concretion,

As neatly and as charmingly shut in

As my grandmother’s face in a daguerreotype,

In a round apricot velvet case.
