A Gallant Woman

Clara Shanafelt

From “In Summer”

SHE burst fierce wine

From the tough skin of pain,

Like wind that wrings from rigid skies

A scant and bitter gleam,

Long after the autumnal dusk

Has folded all the valleys in.
