Vesuvius
A CROWN of smoke, a crumbling cone of dust,

And at her feet a curve of azure sea:

So stands Vesuvius angry and august,

Last of her fiery race in Italy.

Pontifex Maximus
A palace, and a garden, and a dome,

All that remain of Empire far and free;

An old man exiled in an alien Rome

Wearing a crown of smoke in Italy.
