The Birds of God

Frances Shaw

AT dawn

Your thoughts, like birds of God,

Sang to you at your play.

Tonight

The horrid beasts of war

Have driven God’s birds away.

O child,

You are too young for fears,

And oh, too young for sorrow.

But clasp your little hands

And pray

That all God’s birds of yesterday

May sing again tomorrow.
