Conversion of St. Paul

Henry Alford (1810–1871)

THE GREAT apostle, called by grace,

Weaned from all works beside,

Preached the same faith he once abhorred,

And Christ, whom he denied.

In perils and in troubles oft,

His toilsome life he past,

But He who turned his heart at first,

Upheld him to the last.

A chosen vessel of His will,

He fought the fight of faith;

And gained the crown of righteousness

Obedient unto death.

Thus, Lord of grace, to all Thy will

Obedient may we be;

And follow meekly in his steps,

Ev’n as he followed Thee.
