Both a and b from Germanic *dailaz. 3. ordeal, from Old English ordl, trial by ordeal, from Germanic prefixed form *uz-dailjam, “a portioning out,” judgment (*uz-, out; see ud-). 4. firkin, from Middle Dutch deel, part, from Germanic *dailiz.
