DEFINITION:To give. 1a. Matthew, from Hebrew mattayyh, from *mattan-yh, gift of Yahweh, from mattan, bound form of mattn (< *mantan), gift (yh, Yahweh; see hwy); b. (i) Nathan, from ntn, he (God) gave; (ii) Jonathan, from Hebrew yôntn, Yahweh has given, from ntn, he gave (yô, Yahweh; see hwy). Both a and b from Hebrew ntan, to give; c. Nathanael, from Hebrew ntanl, God has given, from ntan, reduced form of ntan (see above; l, God; see l). 2. Esarhaddon, from Akkadian Aur-aa-iddin, Ashur has given a brother, from iddin (< *yandin), preterite of nadnu, to give (aa, brother; see ).
