The prefix anti- goes back to Greek anti, meaning “against.” Anti- is so recognizable and its meaning is so clear that it is frequently used to make up new words. For example, the meanings of words such as anticrime and antipollution are easy to guess. Sometimes, when followed by a vowel, anti- becomes ant-: antacid.
