The prefix bio- comes from Greek bios, meaning “life.” When used to form words in English, bio- generally refers to living organisms or to biology, the science of living organisms. Many of the words that begin with bio- have only come into being in the 20th century, as bioethics and biotechnology. Sometimes before an o, bio- becomes bi-: biopsy.
