§ 16. fore-


The prefix fore- means “before, in front.” A forerunner is “one that goes before” and a foreleg is “a front leg of an animal.” It is important not to confuse fore- with the prefix for- (sometimes spelled fore-), which appears in many English words but is no longer used to form words in English. This prefix bears the meaning of exclusion or rejection, and survives in words like forbid and forswear.    1
