Chodowiecki, Daniel Nikolaus
(dä´nl n´klous khôdôvyts´k) (KEY) , 17261801, German painter and engraver, b. Danzig. He was the most popular illustrator of his day in Prussia. The Departure of Jean Calas (1767) is his most famous painting. It is as an engraver, however, that Chodowiecki is best known. His book illustrations include designs for Schillers Räuber, Cervantess Don Quixote, Goldsmiths Vicar of Wakefield, and Shakespeares works.
