Clark, Jonas Gilman
 
 
1815–1900, founder of Clark Univ., b. Hubbardston, Mass. After a long career in business and finance, he became interested in higher education, making extended trips of observation abroad and interviewing American college presidents. In 1887 he founded Clark Univ. at Worcester, Mass., with an endowment of $1 million, to which, by his will, was added his residuary estate for the establishment of Clark College, the undergraduate school.
