inlet of the Indian Ocean, 200 mi (322 km) long and 80 mi (129 km) wide, SE South Australia state, Australia, between Eyre and Yorke peninsulas. The gulf is the major outlet for iron ore from Middleback Range. Whyalla, Port Pirie, and Port Augusta are on the gulf.
