El’gin Marbles.
A collection of ancient bas-reliefs and statues made by Lord Elgin, and sent to England in 1812. They are chiefly fragments of the Par’thenon at Athens, and were purchased by the British Government for £35,000, to be placed in the British Museum (1816). (Elgin pronounced ‘gin,’ as in begin.)
