Longfellow calls Florence Nightingale St. Filomena, not only because Filomena resembles the Latin word for a nightingale, but also because this saint, in Sabatellis picture, is represented as hovering over a group of sick and maimed, healed by her intercession. (See THAUMATURGUS.)
