1 M3 Assignment: Analytic Essay Miranda Archuleta Pueblo Community College HUM 115: World Mythology Professor Teresa Pagel July 11, 2021
2 M3 Assignment: Analytic Essay In this module of the course, we have discussed two new different approaches to apply to the myths covered. Those being historical and cosmological approaches. When one is attempting to utilize the historical approach regarding myths, one should be paying attention to key historical elements that directly focus on the history associated with the myth. One should be asking if there are any of the myth is based off reality and of those elements which provide historical data for that culture and/or time period. When analyzing using the cosmological approach, one is questioning and explaining the origin of creation in the myth. Utilizing the historical approach, the Norse and Icelandic men to be very strong men, possibly larger, and may be intimidating to some. Life seems to be tough which required them to be tougher. This is due to a part of the reading of the Viking and Troy. This reading speaks of twelve kingdoms, one significant high king and twelve chieftains who embodied the definition of a manly man. Another section that contributed to this belief is when Thor is spoken of. "When he was twelve winters old he had his full measure of strength; then he lifted clear of the earth ten bear-skins all at one time; and then he slew Duke Lóríkus, his foster-father (Selections from Prose Edda Creation, 2021)." They must have a higher endurance for how much they travel in the story. It is not like modern times where you hop in a vehicle to arrive at your destination. Utilizing the cosmological approach while analyzing this myth the region is divided into three parts: the south, the west and the area bordering the Mediterranean Sea. The southern region was so hot in the myth is states “parched with sun”. The second part referred to as Európá or Eneá with its northern part being so cold that no grass is able to grow and the story states no man lives there. The third part is called Asia where the myth speaks this the most favorable region. “There also is the center of the earth; and even as the land there is lovelier and better in
3 every way than in other places, so also were the sons of men there most favored with all goodly gifts: wisdom, and strength of the body, beauty, and all manner of knowledge (Selections from Prose Edda Creation, 2021)." I imagine the area to be quite difficult it is either vast and open or so cold it is consumed with ice. I see that Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Saxland, and England are namedropped. One potential reason I see Norse cosmology to be so different is the different realms. Utilizing the historical approach after reading the Japanese Kojiki there are many elements of historical importance. The Kojiki is the oldest book of Japanese history and the oldest known form of text although the story is written in Chinese. The Kojiki is a significant element in describing the age of gods and how the Japanese Islands were created with the deities. Utilizing the cosmological approach after reading the Japanese Kojiki I would consider the cosmology to be more focused on the land such as The Birth of the Eight Islands or potentially The Land of the Underworld. Both I mentioned lack clear limits but are significant elements of the myth. The eight islands containing six islands in all from the Island of Ko, in Kibi to the Island of Heaven's Two-Houses. Utilizing the historical approach while reading the Yoruban Creation Myth it talks about how humans created the Yoruba Village in Ife. There is a large focus on agriculture and harvesting as well as a special relationship with the land around them. There is a large focus on corn which is referenced early in the myth "The sun shone on his vines and cornfields (Yoruban African Creation Myth, 2021)." The sun and corn are crucial in the survival of people. When reading the Yoruban (African) Creation Myth, The Creation of Ife can be considered the cosmology in this story to be Heaven. There is much significance to Heaven as it is referenced multiple times in the myth.
