7-2 Final Project Milestone Three: Strategic IT Initiatives 2 A. Strategic Outcomes: SWOT Analysis Strengths: The internal strengths of the organization pertaining to the use of technology at Vermont Teddy Bear features a team of nine IT professionals. The team is headed by the Vice President of Information Technology Bob Stetzel, who oversees the day to day operations and implements new policies, procedures, etc. for the organization. Through combining backgrounds the CEO and VP of IT have been able to (1) work together to cut down on organizational cost, (2) develop a budget that saves money, and (3) implement new systems. (4) Due to these changes, the organization has been able to grow due to the information technology department expanding into the online shoppers market where Teddy Bears and other items are being sold every day. (5) Customers are able to make custom orders and the website is easy to navigate, user friendly, and provides details on ordering products. Opportunities: The opportunities of the organization as they pertain to the use of technology would be to (1) Invest in implementation of updated utilized software and developing new applications to assist with online orders. (2) Implementing a CRM system to enhance operations and bring in more customers. This adds a competitive advantage to the organization and presents several opportunities for business growth (MBA Skool Team, 2013). (3) Business opportunities are then presented as customers have ease of access, have faith in the company, and will then become repeat customers with the hopes it extends to other friends or family therefore generating future profit.
7-2 Final Project Milestone Three: Strategic IT Initiatives 3 Weaknesses: One of the biggest weaknesses in the Vermont Teddy Bear organization pertaining to the use of technology is (1) weak IT structure as the members of the IT team spend most of their time troubleshooting issues. (2) Knowledge gained and learned has not been shared or made into dedicated guidelines for future IT members. (3) Best practices are implemented and not put into a formal document. (4) The organization also does not host any formal IT training throughout the year and therefore employees are left to do their work with little guidance (Gogan & Lewis, 2011). Threats: The biggest threat facing VTB is (1) The prospect of faster, better, and cheaper competition as commerce is changing everyday. Therefore in order to keep customers there must be a constant focus on marketing, management and operations maintenance. (2) Teddy Bears are a popular item which can be bought through many other companies. This makes competition the biggest threat to VTB who already offers U.S. made products, Teddy Bears from recycled material, and custom orders. (3) Outsourcing to other countries limits the grasp on the IT department. SWOT Summary: The information technology department at VTB has a very successful IT team which focuses on supplying quality service to customers; however, troubleshooting issues has become an issue. IT members are not able to spend as much time on their specified positions due to this and there are several new implementations which need to be made in order for VTB to continue
