1 Letter to Parents: Self-regulation Children Book Julia Kruljac Department of Psychology, University of Alaska Anchorage PSY A365: Child and Adolescent Development Dr. Mari Ippolito April 22. 2024
2 Parent Letter Draft 1 Dear parents, I am interested in creating a children's tale that focuses on the importance of self- regulation skills as a central theme. The book would target children aged three to eight. The main objective of this storybook is to offer young individuals the chance to develop the essential skills needed to appropriately regulate their emotions and behaviors. It is crucial for children to have the capacity to self-regulate at a young age, as this forms the basis for their future emotional and social well-being. This book employs captivating visuals and relevant characters to enable young children to easily grasp the concept of self-regulation, making the acquisition of knowledge a joyful and straightforward experience. By introducing these important skills early on, children can better navigate their emotions and interactions with others as they grow older. The engaging storytelling and relatable scenarios in this book will help children understand the importance of self- regulation in a fun and interactive way. The primary aim of the book's contents is to not only describe self-regulation but also to educate young individuals on the importance of utilizing this skill and guide them on how to integrate it into their daily routines. The contents of this book will be presented in a manner that allows young children to readily assimilate and integrate them into their own lives. If children are given the chance to engage in interactive activities and receive concise explanations, they will develop a strong grasp of self-
3 regulation and be able to apply it in an engaging and enjoyable manner. Another notable aspect of the book is its incorporation of tangible illustrations and situations that young minds can easily grasp or may have already encountered. As a result, individuals will gain insight into the importance of self-regulation in their personal experiences and develop an understanding of the potential advantages it can provide in various circumstances. By connecting these concepts to real-life scenarios, children can see the practical benefits of self-regulation and how it can positively impact their daily lives and eventually future lives. This approach not only enhances their comprehension but also motivates them to actively practice self-regulation in different situations. To enhance children's understanding and retention of the concepts and skills taught in the book, it is beneficial to incorporate interactive and relatable elements into the learning process. The primary objective is to empower young children with the capacity to exert command over their emotions and actions, resulting in enhanced self- regulation and overall welfare. It is an essential skill that we employ every day, starting from an early age in preschool and persisting throughout our entire adult lives. Self- regulation is a cognitive ability that we employ. Individuals who do not possess the ability to self-regulate may struggle to effectively manage stress and make decisions that promote their well-being. The cultivation of this aptitude is vital for preserving our psychological and emotional well-being and is what governs our responses to diverse circumstances and obstacles. The development of superior self-regulation abilities is strongly correlated with long-term success in academics and careers (Committee for Children, 2016).
