2 Alder distinguished three protective tendencies: withdrawal, aggression, and excuses. These inclinations result from Alder's theory that people embrace certain behaviors to hide their inflated sense of self-worth from others. Among these inclinations, our inquiry will center on withdrawal or safeguarding through distance because I have firsthand experience. Withdrawal distorts oneself from problems to preserve one's inflated sense of superiority. Withdrawal Alder (1956) discusses four methods of defense or safeguards: moving backward, standing still, hesitating, and constructing obstacles. Moving backward tends to involve running away to a more secure location to maintain control and feel superior. Standing still is characterized by not moving in any direction. People defend their self-worth and shield themselves from failure by doing so. Hesitation, often referred to as the Protective Tendency is typified by hesitation or procrastination that is intended to provide someone the justification "It's too late" for doing what they wanted to accomplish when they are going through a tough time. Last but not least is the propensity to build barriers in the way of one's accomplishment. This tendency enables people to safeguard their self-esteem by overcoming the barrier or using it to justify failing. Example of Safeguarding in Scripture ( Withdrawal) The narrative of Jonah serves as a scriptural illustration of withdrawal safeguarding. When God summoned Jonah to go to the city of Nineveh to deliver the message of repentance, Jonah fled in the opposite direction, boarding a ship bound for Tarshish (Jonah 1:1-3, English Standard Version, 2001). Jonah's retreat was not so much due to his cowardice. Still, he felt resentment against the Lord for giving the hated enemy a chance to repent (Jonah 4:1-2, English Standard Version, 2001), leading him to give up fulfilling God's command. Jonah decided to completely
3 remove himself from the situation rather than take on the task of bringing a complex message to a city steeped in sin. Jonah moved backward in order to safeguard his interests and escape the potential repercussions of complying and traveling to that city to preach messages of salvation. Safeguard Tendencies in My Life While reading the assignment and the book we had to read, I began to reflect and concluded that I tend to withdraw when I feel insecure about a situation I was put in or put myself in. For example, when I must do assignments at home that I don't want to do, such as folding clothes, I usually escape from the situation with the excuse that I didn't have time or was doing something. Still, in reality, it was nothing important. Also, when my boss told me to take an inventory of the products in the store, he said that I couldn't because there were too many customers when he could have my employees do it. Or when I had to study for a biblical duty at church, he would relieve me of the responsibility by saying he was too busy at work. I have a tendency to act aggressively and become defensive when I'm uncomfortable or feel vulnerable. Biblical perspective on Safeguarding Tendencies The Bible contains multiple instances of safeguarding tendencies. But still, the most typical excuses. Moses, for instance, didn't think he could make a good leader. "However, Moses spoke the lord, saying, 'O my lord, I am slow of speech and of the tongue, neither before nor since you spoke to your servant.'" (Exodus 4:10-14, English Standard Version). Moses could have led the Israelites far more successfully if he had only trusted in the Lord; instead, he chose to distrust his
