Drama A Good Man is Hard to Find Nastacia Russell University of the People A Good Man is Hard to Find A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor, a short story that delves into the very sense of religious views that most hold dear. Using heavy foreshadowing elements, O’Connor shows the concept of Nihilism and the idea that humanism is merely a matter of opinion rather than fact. The title itself creates a foreshadowing of the human nature, detailing as plainly as it says, inherently good individuals are almost impossible to find. The grandmother in the story holds her religious and social taught beliefs so strongly that even in the face of imminent death, she refrains from accepting that ‘The Misfit’ is a naturally evil man. Often repeating that he is a good man at heart, or that he is not of ‘common’ blood it depicts her denial of ‘The Misfits’ character nature. His sociopathic nature is defined in his inability to remember exactly what he was sent to prison for yet still knowing that they had accused him of murdering his father. The black hat he wore and the method in which he wore it was the same mannerism as the cloak of the Reaper, shadowing his face enough to create the illustration and fear of the unknown. The depiction O’Connor used was quite excellent “He shook his head. All she saw was the black hat wiggle between his shoulder blades. ‘Nome,’ he said.” (p. 9) The grandmother had even noticed how bony he was, adding to the similarities he shares with the Reaper as it is often depicted as a skeletal being. The men that had traveled with ‘The Misfit’ were regarded as pigs frequently, identifying them as a scavenger/bottom feeder like a vulture, something that would clean and dispose of the Reapers
