The civil war is a dark time in the history of America. We fought and bleed until we had lost many. But, there were many reasons to such hatred brewing in a nation. One of these was slavery. Until the antebellum, the inevitable issue was just being hidden behind many compromises and acts put in place to... hide it. Abolitionist and Pro-slavery settlers attacked each other. Bleeding Kansas was an example. John Brown had attacked 5 Pro slavery settlers and many Pro slavery settlers attacked Lawrence.
Another pressing issue was the Kansas-Nebraska act. The compromise given by Douglas had proposed that they let the territories decide whether they will have slavery or not. His idea of popular sovereignty had caused an immense amount of conflict.
In 1861, a Civil War broke out in the United States when the South declared their independence from the Union. There is a great amount of reasons that people can argue how the Civil War was started. However, what most people don’t understand, is that most of the events leading up to the Civil War were related to slavery. Slavery was the core of the North and South’s conflict, which led to a very vicious feud.
The Kansas and Nebraska Act was also a major cause of political conflicts. It pressured popular sovereignty over those new territories. Kansas, according to the Northerners, was being pressured into becoming a slave state by having acts of violence be done against them. As well, people from Missouri were going into Kansas and using their power to vote for it as a slave state, and the North
The Civil War was caused by many several pressures, principles, and prejudices, fueled by sectional differences, and was finally set into motion by a most unlikely set of political events. From economic differences to political differences all the way up to cultural differences, the North and the South opposed each other. These tensions were further increased after the western expansion of the United States. By the early 1850’s a civil war was known to be likely coming soon.
Tensions between both sides arose when Douglas passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Senator Douglas felt that Kansas and Nebraska should be subjected to popular sovereignty like other western territories. Although the many temperate politicians like Abraham Lincoln wanted to avoid the Civil War and were fine with allowing slavery to die slowly. But, many influential political leaders of the 19th century were not. The South was interested in maintaining slavery to the new territories to increase their economy and political power. Due to lack of leadership neither side could come to a compromise, as Stephen Douglas put it what applied in the South could not similarly apply as in the north and vice versa (Doc 5), these were two distinct societies, but there was still room for a middle ground. The North had an interest in limiting the spread of slavery into the new territories for both purposes of controlling Southern political
The Civil War is something almost everyone has a general idea about. It is more than a huge part of America’s history and is the central event in America 's historical consciousness. This war, unlike the American Revolution which created the first American states, determined what kind of nation it would be. Though there are many reasons for the cause of the American Civil War, one of the main reasons is the different attitudes the North and the South had toward slavery. In January of 1863, The Emancipation Proclamation was
The Civil War was a battle between the north and south, and most people assume the reason the civil war happened was just that of slavery. This is true but most people don’t truly know what really started the Civil War 40 years earlier than the war started. The Civil War was truly started by one thing alone, the Missouri Compromise of 1812. The Civil War was an event caused by the Missouri compromise and all the ripples are created through the 40 years after. After the Missouri Compromise and its good job of holding the balance in the House, and Senate, but failed to keep people from speaking out against what it did, making political leaders speak up and battle between this compromise making one half of the country are prejudice group. It
Most people believe the Civil War was fought only over slavery and for abolition. Because of the speech Abraham Lincoln gave “The emancipation Proclamation,” it looks like the Civil War was a war about the morals of the nation. A war could not be stopped from happening once the Compromise of 1850 happened. The South was frantic to keep slavery going. Their whole economy was bases around the economics of slavery. The North did not realize that there was more than freeing the slaves to do with the war. The economics of the south was free labor caused by slavery. The black slave was a God sent for the Southern states in that it allowed them to make a great profit off their crops. William Freehling said, “Posterity thinks
The Civil War was a major event and turning point in our country’s history. It rocked our very foundation as a nation and put our own people against each other in all out war. I firmly believe that this war was an inevitable conflict that could not have been avoided for many reasons. There was just too much building for so long in so many different areas within our nation that this looming eruption into civil war was a forgone conclusion. Slavery is seen as the main factor and many just give that as a single word answer for why war broke out between the north and south states, as seen in the Simpsons video we watched in class.
Unfortunately, this railroad would have to go through Nebraska, and in order to build the railroad through it, it would have to become new US territory. Many people in the North also wanted Nebraska to be admitted as a state, settlers wanted to move there, but could not legally hold a claim on the land. People in the South didn’t want to accept Nebraska because it lay north of the 36°30’ parallel where slavery had been outlawed by the Missouri Compromise (Bloody Kansas) Douglas proposed repealing the Missouri Compromise and allowing new states to choose if they were for slavery or not, a system called “popular sovereignty.” To win southern support, Douglas asked to create a state that would be inclined to support slavery. The opposition was brutal, but the bill passed in 1854, creating the states of Nebraska and Kansas. The passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act created tension in the world of politics, eventually causing the end of the Whig Party, a major political party originally dedicated to reinforcing the power of the Congress over that of the President. (Bloody Kansas) The pro-slavery Whigs joined the Democratic Party, while the abolitionist Whigs reorganized themselves to become the Republican Party. The passage of the bill also lead to a mini civil war between the
In 1854, the argument over slavery appeared in Congress again when Stephen A. Douglas introduced the Compromise of 1850. Kansas and Nebraska would become free states because of where they are located, north of 36’30’N latitude. If they both became free states, the balance would be broken. Douglas knew southerners would object to this so he let the people in each territory vote on it to be a free or slave state so he introduced the Kansas-Nebraska Act. This is called popular sovereignty when the people get to decide on an issue.
As Civil War became increasingly evident and unavoidable in the United States, what the war was about was highly contested and is still argued to this day. People in the south were unapologetically saying that they were fighting for slavery. However, Abraham Lincoln’s initial statement is that the war was for “union”, however this narrative eventually evolved when it was too difficult to avoid discussing slavery. Slavery was the primary cause of the civil war, however there were also many underlying themes that helped lead the country to war. Many of these themes included the economic, ideological, and political differences the country was facing, however all of these somehow link back to slavery.
The North and the South both had to make extreme adjustments in order to prepare themselves for an all-out internal war. Both sides of this conflict grew from the same place. It was severely differing opinions and ideologies that caused the bloodiest war in American history. Most people believe that the Civil war was fought over the slavery enterprise, and they are partially right. The civil war did in fact have ties to opposition and the attempted removal of slavery in the United States, but that was not the only reason for this bloody and ill-fated War Between the States.
The Civil War was a major conflict in United States History. Many southerners believed it was the South fighting to defend states’ rights, while other believed it was due to slavery. But the Civil War did not just come about overnight. Mainly during the prior decade, but honestly since the beginning of the United States, the North and South have struggled with a major issue, slavery. The Civil War was inevitable because a united nation cannot exist if people are strongly split on the extremely important issue of slavery. Events like the Compromise of 1850, Fugitive Slave Act, and the secession of Southern states, were some of the significant factors leading up to the Civil War.
The Civil War, the second major conflict within our newly established country, was highly influenced by the lingering remnants of ideals and conventions from the Revolution. The citizens of the United States once again divided over parallel notions about 86 years later. Yes, slavery was a large catalyst for the Civil War. However, there was another motive at the core of the issue that would incite the masses. Because of the aforementioned rebel mentality that the country was founded on, the South bucked at the North’s attempt of freeing slaves. The North employed gradual emancipation, using such strategies as the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. Thus, plantation owners and farmers would be forced to surrender their main source of income and
Over the years the actual cause of the Civil War has been misinterpreted. Many people believe that the only reason of the war was to end slavery; they are far away from being right. There were several other factors involved. We can see the different points of view on varying from state to state. If you were to ask people in the southern states they would tell you that the north wanted to abolish slavery to affect their economy and change their traditional lifestyle. On the other hand if you asked a northerner they would tell you it was to preserve the Union as one and for better chances of prosperity in the west. One thing they can both agree on is that they did not want the same thing as a society at the time. While slavery was one of the
