According to Statica.com, there are more than 2.4 billion social media users in the world while Facebook remains the leading social network since September 2017. Like many other things, internet and social media have their own positives and negatives. Some of the positives are social learning, it acts as a voice for the society and it encourages self-love and appreciation. Though it still has its own disadvantages, some are; it promotes cyberbullying, differentiation and jealousy, and it also affects our studies. According to Livescience.com, “Facebook was the most common place to be bullied. The source also discloses that Pew Research found that 15 Percent of teens were disturbed and uncomfortable about having their private message posted in a public. Also, the research showed that 39 percent of teens had been bullied in some ways compared to the 22% who don’t use social networks. The Internet can also be used for crimes. When you allow social media to check your location, it might provide information to assault people, stalkers or anybody whom you don’t know who might do bad things to you. Also, social media can support hacking which may promote theft or scams. Moreover, unauthorized sharing can make you lose properties and may cause loss of money. This once happened to my grandmother back in Kenya, when she was called by an unknown person, telling her they’re seeing her and to open the door and give him money, which was a lie because she has received like a hundred of them. People can also spread hate speech; high schools more so, when you’re trying to build a better name for yourself and gossip makes its way into the school, other students haunt and make fun you for life. And you can get isolated and end up having depression which can cause you to commit suicide. Also, they might take pictures of teachers, put their own words and use them as memes which are quite disrespectful.
A prevalent issue regarding social media and interactions exists between researchers and social network users. Social media is currently changing how relationships between people are created. Relationships can exist through people across the world through social media and can produce more emotional bonds with friends that you can see everyday. On the other hand, social media also could present conflicts due to the fact that some of these relationships can become unhealthy and that people could change to be more dependent on internet friends, becoming introverted.
Social media is used by everyone. 71% of high schoolers say they utilize more than one of these social networking sites: Facebook, Google+, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Vine and Tumblr (Lenhart). These sites can benefit people, but can also hurt them. The creators of these sites did not intend for people to abuse them. They were made for everyone 's enjoyment. They can also be very informative and relaxing. Unfortunately, when people continue to misuse social media there can be serious consequences.
Bullying on the network is easier than face to face. In social media cyberbullying can be hard to find. The person can hide its identiy and make fun of its victim, while cuasing others to do the same thing, by posting pictures, messages etc. Studies revel more than twenty-five percent of teens have been a target of cyberbullying. Social media can also spread non informational text about health care and news. For example Hurricane Sandy cuased a great amount of people to leave or aboned the city it was being targeted. However, there are some negative effects that come with social media. Research has shown that social networking sites can be very addictive. People who use social networking sites for their daily communication are hooked to a point that they neglect health responsibilities, especially their diet. The addictive nature of social media can lead to eating disorders, obesity, heart problems, sleep disorders, and other pertinent health issues. ("Social Networking: Advantages vs. Addictions.") Another downside to social media is that the user could share too much information which may pose threats to them. (Ali, Imtiaz) People using social media need to know the risks that come with social networking. Users can help protect themselves by not sharing personal information with others they do not know and by having their social networking profiles on a private setting.
Social media, Such as Facebook, has been linked directly to depression caused in teens in ages 12-18. Social media bullying is incredibly similar to regular bullying in the sense that the people who become victims of bullying often takes to bullying themselves and take out their pain on other people.

There are many cyber bullies on social networking sites right now trolling many innocent people and leaving them with mental scars while staying anonymous. Cyber bullies threaten, harass, and torment young adults and youth by sending anonymous texts, emails, and comments. They can even pose as someone you personally know. Cyber bullying can leave people with stress anxiety and depression. Some victims of cyberbullying even committed suicide.

Cyber Bullying can be a problem especially with insecure people who are allowed to use it too young, but the majority of people are fine with a bit of crud and joking. The article, Bullycide: A brief history of the Phoebe Prince phenomenon is all about the kids who became cyber bullied. They have a collection of real stories of people being cyberbullied. It contains many examples of people being bullied and committing suicide. This article stated, “By many accounts, it is getting worse, as social networking and text-messaging have expanded the bullies toolkit: Studies show that 33 to 42 percent of kids have been attacked or humiliated online.” (“Bullycide”).
Social media is one of the most widespread methods of communication and interaction worldwide. While social media comes in various forms, they all tend to share the same motive: Encourage the public socialize. They can create fake accounts, and use them to be someone else and make people believe they are someone they are not. Not only that, some people use accounts to steal money from others. While other people have been assaulted before and it’s unsafe to talk or even meet up with someone that they know from social networking sites.
