The current societal view of aging in the United States and Tennessee is negative. Society sees elderly people and being a cumbersome, hard to handle or weak. Its looked upon as if it were some form of disease.

Tennessee provide a number of different services for older adults. Caregiving services, nursing homes and hospice care. Other services such as meals on wheels and Medicaid services are also available.

The issues affecting he baby boomer generation is the possibility of lack of funds for them takes care of themselves. The amount of baby boomers is also a concern, because there are so many people turning 65 at the same time that mean they will also be eligible for Medicare at the same time.

The population of older adults is expected to increase by almost 20% by 2040.

There is no specific age to start the conversation about caregiving. You never know what will have to a relative as the age. By having the conversation early you will be prepared in case caregiving is needed at an unexpected age.

In America, people are changing their views on aging and the elderly. Some of the reasons that the attitudes are changing could be due to more elderly people are remaining in the work place longer, as opposed to retiring early. Riffkin (2014). And there is the fact that we baby boomers are living longer. Even though the U.S. only ranks 53rd with a life expectancy of 79. That’s an increase of one year since 2010. (“The World: Life Expectancy” 2016)
The people from the baby boomer generation are all nearing, if not already in, retirement and old age. Over the next 20 years the amount of elderly people of retirement age is supposed to increase somewhere around 50%. Because of this imbalance there will be a lot of money being directed toward taking care of the baby boomer generation which may lead to decreased funding for younger generations. The baby boomers will all retire around the same time, leaving jobs unfilled. There may also be troubles in the housing market as there may not be enough young people to buy all the houses they sell. The number of immigrants in America are increasing and replacing the baby boomers in being the dominating group in our population.
Sometimes it may even be that she doesn’t need my assistance with anything, she just wants a friendly face and a good listener. I hope when I am older a need a friend someone will be there for me as well. I stopped and listened to show respect to my elder and that what she had to say was meaningful and valuable.

Expect that there will be conflicts and differences of opinion. It is better to talk things out early rather during a crisis situation. Successful caregiving requires love and respect of your loved one and yourself. There will come a time when caregiving will end, and you will need to make another transition; and you will need to be in shape emotionally and financially.
