Humorists are often seen as insignificant contributors of society. People consider humorists no more than just “entertainers”, willing to make fun of anything in order to make a crowd laugh, however, has the audience ever contemplated why humorists are the some of the only people who are allowed to critique anything that crosses their mind without consequences? Alain de Botton, claims the vital role of humorist is, “to convey with impunity messages that might be dangerous or impossible to state directly.” I agree with Alain de Botton’s claims, that humorists do hold an important role in society, which is far more than to entertain. Especially since he dedicated a speech in August, 2016 reaffirming that he does not and never will pay ransom to terrorists. US policy forbids the government to negotiate and make ransom payments, especially to terrorists, since it would make Americans their target. In a political cartoon that was published by Glenn McCoy to Townhall.com in August 2016. President Barack Obama was drawn on the side; tall, skinny with big ears that stick out and a big fat nose. He is looking straight forward, with a serious look, claiming “I don’t negotiate with terrorists”. To the right of the cartoon Obama proudly stands behind a smiling man with a turban labeled “Iran” and with a long white beard hunching over a huge pile of cash, that is labeled $400 M ransom money. Above Obama the speech bubble says, “I give them (terrorists) whatever they want”. Most people certainly get a laugh out of a ridiculous cartoon, in which the president of the United States is giving millions of dollars to terrorists. As I mentioned before, when the work of humorist is analyzed. One will discover that it has much more meaning to it than “just a simple joke”, thus the tacit message the humorist is sending is exposed. More specifically this cartoon exposes Obama and the government as liars and terrorists to the American people.
