The rate at which migration is increasing globally calls for the need to understand the differences that exist among cultures. The Arabic coffee hour is an event where Georgia Southern University Students learn about the Arab culture. At the start of the event, there was self-introduction to break the ice then coffee was brewed and served as refreshments alongside cookies. After this, videos about the Arab culture were watched on YouTube. There are over 200 million Arabs in the world and at least 1.9 million people of Arab descent in the United States. These include people from Morocco, Palestine, Egypt, Lebanon, Tunisia, Kuwait, Syria, Somalia, Libya, Yemen and Jordan. The three major religions of the Arab world are Islam, Christianity and …show more content…
Just like the Edo culture, Arabs value family. Family is the center of everything with the father as the head of the household. The father serves as the protector and is expected to take care of the family financially. He also has the first and final word in every aspect of the family’s life like education, health, marriage and so on. Also, the male child is more valued than the female child. This is because girls will marry into another household, while the boys will carry on their family’s name. Also, respect is stressed in the Arab culture. Children are meant to respect the elderly and ask for their opinion, even though their advice may not necessarily be taken. The only difference between the Arab culture and mine is their way of dressing. Unlike my culture where people tend to dress however they choose, the Arabs are very conservative with outer appearance. The style of music is also different. Attending this event made me realize that if you take the time to learn more about various cultures, you will realize there are more similarities than differences. For instance, I was able to write many similarities between my culture and the Arab culture, but I could only talk about one difference. Therefore, knowing this makes me tolerant of other’s culture as well as culturally competent. Also, thanks to the Arabic Coffee Hour, I have a different perspective of life and have become more respectful and understanding
Have you ever wondered how High Schools are in other countries? Despite sharing some minor similarities, the differences between Nicaraguan and American High School education are clear. Such as, note-taking methods, grading system, classroom environment.

Because my neighbor is considered suburban it often gets a bad rep. A lot of people think that suburbs are boring and aren't interesting. As this suggests, the problem is also cultural. For the most part, American culture and opinion are still created, even in the Internet age, in cities at either edge of the continent. If intellectuals do deign to look at the suburbs they assume that so much banality must be hiding something deeply
Although there are many similarities and differences between American and Somali cultures, parental expectations is one common thing they share. There is one principle that every parent holds so high, that has had a significant impact on their children’s lives, and that is the essential to attend an undeniably prestigious university. American and Somali parents want that their child to be an accountable person. Also, they both want to see that their child is making wise decisions throughout his/her life. Like every other parent, they want to witness that one day there will be a successful person. However, Somali parents have higher expectations than Americans. My parents are a perfect example of this, they have passed on to me an enormous amount
What are Arab Americans? An individual can be classified as “Arab” if the person speaks Arabic, practices Islam, and identifies with the traditions of Arabic-speaking peoples. (Aguirre and Turner 276)These individuals are usually subject to negative and differential treatment by others. It is essential to identify the differential treatment of Arab Americans by others in society. The mistreatment of Arabs in the United States can be contributed to many factors; however, there have been certain events that have occurred in the United States, which have increased and enraged these strong emotional feelings in many Americans. Discrimination and stereotypes of a culture or group mainly develops from a lack of understanding. We can become a
Coming from an Arab American household, there has always been an emphasis on higher education and higher socio economic status. I believe that it is something that can be found in various Arab American Communities in the United States and these standards set in the household show when you look at the statistics as to where Arab Americans stand on both educational and socio economical scales. This paper will look into the history of Arabs in the United States, as well as the demographics of the Arab community in the U.S, and cultural and physiological backings that may all have influence on education. My goal for this research paper is to find the reasons behind the Arab American strive for education and socioeconomic success and whether the Arab culture has a positive or negative influence on the success of Arab Americans.
Arab Americans are defined primarily of their religious identity and they reside in all 50 states. The first generation of immigrants from the Middle East dates back to late 1800s. The majority of immigrants’ population came from Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan. Religion plays an important role in the Arab society and most of their way of life is not necessary because of their religion. Like many other immigrants, the reason these immigrants migrated to the United States was to escape the religious persecution, an opportunity to build a better life. Majority of how Arabs interact and the way their culture is has to do with the Koran and it is one of the foundations of Islamic law. In the Arab American culture, family is an important aspect and everyone plays their respective role. Fathers are the head of the households and are expected to provide for his wife and children. The women has restrictive education and they help support the family by caring for the house. Kids take on a role are taught by their parents depending on their gender. Boys are most likely to follow the footsteps of the father to prepare to care for his own family one day. The girls learn the basics of running a household. It is common for the children to live with their parents until they marry or live with them to care for them as they age and can no longer care for themselves. The Arab culture also value respecting the elders and they are often the decision makers in the family. The family
For this assignment the cultural manifestations I selected to discuss as being important to our Unit’s success are Wasta, Deference to authority, and Tendency to seek compromise. Of course understanding all of the cultural manifestations are important to our unit’s success, but each region within the Middle East-North African (MENA) region will have their own variations based upon which branch of Islam is dominant in the region, what that region’s experience has been with the U.S. or a Western presence in general and numerous other factors such as the prevailing socio-economic factors of the region.
Cooperation and willingness to share and work together to prosper is what makes a community great. Being born in Syria, the land of the oldest continuously inhabited capital in the world, I am blessed to have learned to speak Arabic. With some hard work, I was also able to learn English and French. To establish an Arabic Club to help students learn the language and get to know foreign cultures is one of my goals during college. Wheaton College’s diversity welcoming environment would be the perfect place for that. I gained a lot of new skills from the Entrepreneurship Clubs that I am part of at my community college and I believe highly in college clubs.
cultures and their behavior styles; in order for the culture to accept any type of assistance medical, financial, and education and assist in breaking barriers for counseling with this culture. Arab is one of the well-known culture around the world with a strong connection with Islam. They believe in one God (Allah) and Muhammad is his prophet. In addition, they also believe in Jewish and Christian tradition. Furthermore Arabs are not all Muslim, not are all Muslims Arab. Fewer 20% of Muslims worldwide are Arabs (Hasnain, Shaikh, & Shanawani 2008). There are 22 countries that Arabs are currently living in United States that share common terms of religion, language, and culture; however they vary politically, socially, and economically,
Arab Americans are such a diverse population of immigrants, who have roots that come from the countries of Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Israel, and Palestine just to name a few. Arab American immigrants started to arrive in the United States during the late 19th century. The Arab American population since then has grown to be one of the biggest growing racial groups, next to Asian Americans.
Many people associate the Arab world only with Islam, the dominant religion in the Middle East, North Africa, and beyond. Nevertheless, Kenneth Cragg in his book, The Arab Christian , reminds his readers that Christianity has its roots in the region, many centuries before Islam began to exist. Even though Christianity is not the majority religion among Arabs, there is a significant Christian identity in the Arab world. The Church in places

I cultivated many memorable relationships, while gaining a true understanding of Arab culture and their way of life. Studying the colloquial variety of Jordanian Arabic allowed me to connect on a social level and gain valuable experience in marketplace negotiations. I believe that language learning, in all environments, is important for gaining a true understanding of other cultures. I am most proud of my experience abroad because I was able to watch myself grow academically and professionally in a climate very different from my own. I noticed a high improvement in my ability to speak Arabic, which seemed almost impossible to me, considering my first encounter with the language.
First of all, it is impossible to talk about groups of people without generalizing. At this point it must be emphasized that there is not just “one” Arab culture or society. The Arab world is full of rich and diverse communities, groups and cultures. Each of the Arab countries has different perspectives. That’s why differences exist not only among coun- tries, but within countries as well. With 22 countries formed, the Arab region has in some parts the same religious, politics and
