Many claim the American revolution to be conservative; however, evidence suggests otherwise. Throughout the Eighteenth Century, short term and long term changes occurred within Colonial America. Some of the rapid changes include, and are not limited to, the change of government, the mobility of social status to even the poor, and how mercantilism rapidly changed into capitalism. A main reason for the revolution was the influence of the form of government on its people. For America, it was the change from a monarchy to a republic. The freedoms of the citizens in the colonies felt they were being denied what was rightfully theirs. This was the main reason for the switch to democracy. This allowed for the people to a choice in how they were governed and by whom. This was a radical change from the monarchal government of Britain because before taxes and laws were pushed onto these citizens they had a luxury of not being taxed prior French and Indian War. Although this became the case, many rich prior Revolution stayed in power, an example of these influential people are the plantation owners and wealthy families. Power was often derived from money in the colonial times, and this was proven to be true as people like Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, and much more were influential in …show more content…
The idea of this republic lead to mercantilism being dismantled, and the idea of capitalism being installed in its place. This allowed for a free market, fewer taxes, and most of all the formation and approval of the colonies to manufacture goods. These things created an opportunity for low-class citizens to climb the social pyramid. Even in this wake of new opportunity, the economic distribution of resources remained the same. Land, timber, food, rum, all became leading industries in America, but it was still lead by the people who were a rich prior
The American Revolution was a modern and democratic revolution headed by the upper middle class and had three key phases, a moderate beginning, radical middle, and a conservative end.
The American Revolution occurred due to the conflict between those living in the 13 colonies and the colonial government, which represented the British crown because of the high taxes they were ordered to pay to their homeland. By definition, a revolution means to forcible overthrow of a government or social order in favor of a new system. With the new colonies winning the war against Great Britain, yes, they did overthrow the ruling of the Queen and if not, the United States would still be considered colonies of England. But if one looks through the lens of social, political, and economic change occurring for all people, this was not a true revolution. The middle class did not grow. Slavery was still legal. There was no restructuring in terms of economics and the new America was run on a system of capitalism. Change only truly occurred in terms of politics, with the introduction of a democracy and the constitution. With these changes, only the white male elite were only able to benefit from these changes, gaining more power, ability to participate in politics and financial success. African Americans, white women, and poor men saw no changed in way of life after winning the war. What the war did was began a quest of reform and revolt from these groups who suffered from injustice.
The American Revolution was caused by many built up issues between the British and their colonists in America. Two of the main issues were that the colonists wanted independence from Britain and when the British kept taxing the colonists without consent from them, they got even more fed up.
The American Revolution arises when the British wanted to make money off of the colonists. Also by the French and Indian war leaving the British in debt, the Boston boycott imposed by merchants, and George Washington's protest, “No Taxation Without Representation”. Some goals include, ending mercantilism to mother country, people wanted a say in their government, to have a democracy, and independence. In result it was the first time a colony overthrew its mother country, Americans argued that they aren't offered the same rights. It started up new taxes and reverse salutary neglect policy, women of Boston refused to buy goods, and resolutions before Virginia House of Burgesses.
I think the American Revolution wasn’t really revolutionary. The Speech Made By a Young Free African-American in 1819, Valedictorian of his New York Free School informed people that a young African American boy with the highest academic achievements in his class was still not treated like an equal by the white people. This speech was declared after the Revolutionary War, which shows that the war did not cause the relationship between whites and blacks to become better. He wrote, “No one will employ me; white boys won’t work with me,” and this is an example of how the relation between the two races wasn’t influenced by the war. The document, “Utmost Good Faith” Clause from the Northwest Ordinance, 1787 did not support that the Revolutionary
Given that most colonists were not generally interested in independence why did the American Revolution happen? How was it justified by the likes of Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson? Based upon what you know, were the colonists justified in declaring independence? Why or why not?
The American Revolution was of a progressive nature and had a world-historical significance. The American Revolution had several features that distinguish it from the English bourgeois revolution, and the French Revolution. The first feature of the American Revolution is that it occurred in the territory, which actually did not know feudalism as a socio-economic system. The American Society of revolutionary period did not know the hereditary aristocracy, lords and serfs, the state bureaucracy (except the British administration), shops, guilds, privileged clergy and other attributes of the feudal Europe. This society was democratic in spirit, in their sentiments and beliefs. Social contradictions in it were less severe than in the continental Europe. The second feature of the American Revolution was that it pursued the national liberation. This revolution began as a struggle - initially peaceful, and then armed - with the British colonial rule.
The American Revolution is one of the most lauded and celebrated periods in the history of the United States. People revere the patriotic unity and radical changes employed by the Revolutionary War and the original Constitution. But while the formation of a new nation was radical in and of itself, the Founding Fathers warned against viewing the time as a perfect, golden age. They believed that true change would only manifest in the generations to come. The American Revolution led to fundamental societal changes in the future, but its short term effects, from 1775 to 1800, including governmental changes, like the distribution of power, economic changes, like the distribution of wealth and status, and societal changes, like equality of the sexes and races, were not as radically new—and different from Britain’s—as many Americans believe.
The American revolution left americans free of britain's control giving them the ability to change politics, seek a new society, and a better government. Although they left what they thought was a corrupt government, they settled for a more centralized government that resembled that of the British. Women experienced a huge change after the revolution as the were allotted freedoms. Even some slaves were eventually freed. In total, America didn’t have a lot of change economically, but did face quite a bit of change politically and socially.
After the American Revolution, Americans, who were free of British control, started to reevaluate politics, the economy and society. The American Revolution changed American considerably politically because Americans rely on democracy rather than monarchy, socially because the roles of certain social groups experienced a nuance change, and economically because the Americans freed themselves from having to send their raw materials to England and created their own currency. With these changes also revolved some aspects that this soon to be strong country still has today.
The purpose of The American Revolution was to substitute tyranny to another. Our founding fathers were trying to keep the lower class down from everyone else. Like mentioned in the chapter the founders were able to take over property, make a profit and take over political power from the British Empire. During the process a number of potential rebellions created support for new leadership. The lower class was against the rich before the revolution came about. Most of the leaders of the Patriot movement were under British rule, those who signed the Declaration of Independence were held under the British office. Regardless of what it stood for the lower class felt as the upper or rich class would only support their own interests. The American Revolution was a way to create a system of control in those times and give way for the future generations of leaders, by combining
Through an examination of the social, cultural, economic and political causes of the American Revolution, an exploration of key arguments both for and against the American Revolution, and an analysis of the social, cultural, economic and political changes brought about by the American Revolution it can be demonstrated unequivocally that the American Revolution was indeed truly revolutionary.
During the Market, Revolution America experienced many changes. They include rapid improvements in the transportation and expansion westward. A move from an agrarian society to the production of goods for sale at the market. Emerging technologies and the rise of factories with a shift in population and an economic boom with the rise of capitalism.
The American Revolution happened during 1765 through 1783. The American Revolution mainly happened by the British monarchies because the Britain’s wanted to take currency from the settlers. The cash that the British were trying to take was to buy supplies and all the necessary needs for the war that happened In Europe, the two nations that were fighting were the British and France. That war caused a lot of people to die and some were injured, there are a couple of reasons that led up to the American Revolution. In 1754, The French and Indian war occurred, The French unfortunately lost and stopped depending on Britain as much. In 1764, the sugar act which levied import taxes occurred. Around 1765, the stamp act took place. The
The revolution brought forth new government ideas. On of those ideas was freedom of religion. First off, the colonists wanted men to be free to say their opinion on religion to avoid conflict (Document D). By allowing people to have freedom of religion, this would avoid religious conflict that once occurred while the colonists were under Britain's rule. Another idea was circulated around the idea of how they looked at government. Madison wrote in one of his Federalist Papers how he felt the government has to control the people since they cannot control themselves, but people must also control the government so there is not too much power (Document I). While getting loads of taxes from Britain, the colonists felt that the government was controlling them and they had no say. The colonists could not have a fair trial in vice-admiralty courts, and they had no representation. By having equal share of power the government and govern can all be content. Finally an additional idea was circulated around supporters of Shays Rebellion. The supporters were mainly poor farmers who could not come out of debt from the high inflammation after the revolution. Shays rebellion shows how some poor people thought violence was the way to solve political problems in the country (Document G).From Shays Rebellion the wealthy realized they needed a new way to rule the states and created the famous document, The Constitution. Shortly after winning the American Revolution, change rapidly spread throughout the states. New government ideas such as freedom of religion, the government controlling the the people but people control the government, and creating The Constitution caused changes to be made in America and showed the beginning of a new, established
