Frankenstein thinks that everything is alright now, but Elizabeth has a premonition that the monster will return, and she warns her fiancé that she fears some harm is going to befall him. The novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley tells a strange and tragic tale of a mere human named Victor creating life and the consequences of this act. Throughout the novel, we see Mary Shelley using Robert Walton, Victor Frankenstein, and the monster emphasize a theme of loneliness and the effect it has on a person. It seems that humans have a persistent need for social interaction and acceptance. Mary Shelly shows this to us with the interactions of Victor, Robert and the monster. Before this novel was published the novels were written mainly focused on things such as gothic or romantic novels. As said by H. Bruce Franklin, “…novel that many now accept as the progenitor of modern science fiction…” (Franklin, pg. 2) Shelley went outside the norm and discussed new ideas; she used concepts such as supernatural figures and biblical references, to bring a new style and veering away from the typical gothic novel famous in her time. Today, a science fiction novel is defined as being based on scientific, future, or technological advances; these are the very characteristics in which define this novel.
