At the beginning of the 1970s, two men, by the names of Martin Scorcese and Robert De Niro, met and started an extremely successful and world renowned string of movie director/actor collaborations. Over the course of 22 years,spawning from 1973, with their first film Mean Streets, to 1995, with their most recent work Casino, the duo paired up for 8 movies, most of which are considered some of the greatest films of all time. The most notable, however, would have to be their 1990 movie Goodfellas, a classic film which was nominated for 6 oscars, winning one, and named the greatest film of all time by British film magazine Total Film, an organized crime movie which is one of my favorite movies.

The vision Christopher Nolan had for The Prestige (2006) was to add to the outbreak of street magician film, whilst playing a large dramatic subplot equal in grandeur to the magical performances within the film. In the final sequence of the film, I will analyse how the cinematography and sound resolves the plot so that it summarises the themes present in the film, whilst also invoking a response from the audience. Nolan predominantly uses close up shots, non-diegetic sound (music) and dialogue collaboratively to convey the dramatic, personal subplot of the characters and their relationships, whilst appealing to the audience bringing forth an emotional response from the audience. The heavy, slow, dramatic atmosphere of the ending sequence uses various techniques to summarise and uncover the underlying mysteries of the events throughout the film and consolidate themes introduced during the exposition.

     One of the most interesting components of Jordan's character is her carelessness, in driving, as well as in life. She states, 'It takes two to make an accident,'; implying that she can be careless herself. The way she says this statement makes it seem as if she were saying, 'I can do whatever I want -- other people have to watch out for me.'; She has quite a sense of self-confidence, as well as pride in herself and in her actions. The film, Good will hunting (Bender et al., 1997), is an American classic flick which is lauded for its fresh and ordinary approach towards depicting situations that is realistic and relatable. In the film, Good Will Hunting (Bender et al., 1997), this is clearly show up that, savagery Will Hunting experienced as a youngster and after that shows as a grown-up; along with flashes of a sweet attitude towards his companions and mental virtuoso. Danny Boyle’s film Slumdog Millionaire follows two brothers from the Juhu slum in Mumbai as they face the trials and tributes of growing up in poverty. Although Salim, the elder brother, is given the same childhood experiences and trauma as his younger brother Jamal, his drive and hunger for power lead him to a life of crime, corruption and misconduct. These actions later have a detrimental effect on his relationship with Jamal, which in turn, becomes his demise. Boyle uses a range of effective film techniques to develop Salim’s growth as a character which helps to communicate the idea that ambition can enhance an individual or be the reason for their downfall. Holden is in a cab on his way to Ernie’s and after he asks the driver with Holden. When Holden asks why he is “sore” about it, the cab driver denies being upset. Holden seems to constantly anger people throughout the story due to his blunt way of addressing topics and his inability to see the positive side of things. The cab driver on the other hand, is clearly upset, but is instead choosing to be passive aggressive by denying his anger. I do not like when people are passive aggressive. I would much rather someone talk to me directly and maturely if they are upset.

This personality can make the person display unusual arrogance, lack of empathy as well as absolute need fro admiration that can be seen in the way they carry out their duties at work and generally how they would like to be perceived in a relationship.

Illusory superiority. That is what it is called when we think that we are better than someone else. It happens to us all at one point or another. We see someone in the street, in class, or at practice, and we stick up our noses. “I am so much better than them” you think to yourself as they go about their business. Maybe it is because of the way they look, or act, or maybe it is just because you think they do not meet your standards in some way. I am guilty of this as well. My experience happened at a fly fishing competition just a few weeks ago, but I was quickly shown that what I thought was totally wrong.

A few months ago I decided to make a trip to the local theater to check out a new release called the Big Short. The trailer played all over primetime and made the movie look very interesting. It was based on a true story and the plot was the mortgage crisis our country witnessed in 2008. I have always been interested in how the Wall Street money market works and how people make and lose millions every day. I myself play with a few stocks once and awhile but nothing too fancy. The mortgage crisis didn’t affect me as much as it did too many other Americans, I guess I can say I made good out of the whole situation. This opening quote from the Netflix original series, House of Cards, sets the tone for the ultimate theme of power displayed over the course of the show. The main character, Frank Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey, first speaks to the audience after mercilessly killing his neighbor’s dog after it was hit by a car. Because the dog was injured, it became a useless being and merely a nuisance to Underwood. This example seen in the first episode is a blunt introduction to a main character that is not only power-hungry but also shows no sympathy for the weak. Frank Underwood states that power lasts centuries while money causes people, and things, to fall apart. According to the article by Sivanathan, power is based on an individual’s intentional and effective capacity to control, modify, or influence others by “providing or withholding resources or administering punishments” (Sivanathan). Frank Underwood chooses power because it allows him to leave a legacy that will never be forgotten, while simultaneously granting him access to other types of power.
