The poem “For the Union dead” by Robert Lowell is one of the writings whose title is exquisitely regarded. Commencing as a private meditation of his childhood the poet flashbacks on the commitment of Colonel Robert Shaw a union officer who was assassinated during the battalion of the black soldiers during the time of the civil war. Altering from the historical ancient and modern analysis, the poet is depicted lamenting that the heroic nature in the Contemporary America has been eroded. The contemplation of the poem is based on the mark left by the civil war which commemorates the death of Colonel Robert Shaw who died during the time when he was assigned to be the commander of the black regiment. He died because of sacrificing his life for the unity of the nation (Axelrod, 125). Symbolically, his deaths depict the union idealism that existed during that time. In his poem, Lowell shows the contrast that exists between the heroism of Shaw and the modern forms of greed and self-interests that are prevalent in the society. The title of the poem is symbolic in that it depicts that the national unity of America is dead meaning that it no longer exists.

When songwriters begin to pen the lyrics of a song, I believe their ultimate goal is to transcend time in hopes of reaching listeners for generations to come. J.R. Cash, professionally known as Johnny Cash, wrote a song that did just that. “Ragged Old Flag” is a patriotic song that speaks to every generation. Written in 1974, “Ragged Old Flag” was meant to tell the story of our country. Johnny Cash recorded “Ragged Old Flag” live at the House of Cash. Cash wanted the song to be recorded live because it was raw, untouched, and unapologetically real. The basis of this analysis is to show how patriotism spans generations, but also why a song such as, “Ragged Old Flag” is an important part of patriotism in the United States of America.
Death is a topic that unites all of humanity. While it can be uncomfortable to think about, confronting death in unavoidable. “Dying” addresses that discomfort and universal unwillingness to consider the inevitability of death. Pinsky’s use of imagery, symbolism, and tone create a poetic experience that is like death, something every reader can relate to. In “Dying,” Pinsky describes how people are oblivious and almost uncaring when it comes to the thought of death. Pinsky is trying to convince the reader that they shouldn’t ignore the concept of death because life is shorter than it seems.
The title itself alludes to “The Unknown Soldier,” almost parodying it. According to Georgia Virtual School, an unknown soldier died in battle, however, the body is unrecognizable. It is also known that soldiers are tagged. The fact that the title is the way it is and the subtitle mimics a tag implies that the lives of common folk is so insignificant and uneventful that they might just as well be unknown since they are just another face in the vast crowd of people. This relays a metaphor in the eyes of the reader.

In Edgar Allan Poe’s “Spirits of the Dead”, Poe introduces the reader to life and death. This is a very sorrow filled poem, with death and forgiveness. The way Poe uses Life and Death is part of what brings this poem to life. The use of life and death is exactly what Poe chooses to address as he uses imagery and personification of the life he once had and the love he once possessed. The literary techniques in “Spirits of the dead”, are the mood and tone of this poem. It shows what Poe really feels behind his words.
Ladies of the Confederacy are often linked to the term “southern belle.” This label traditionally evokes images of beautiful, spoiled young ladies whose primary concerns were that of attending balls and capturing the attention of men. Attended to by numerous slaves, the stereotypical southern belle “had few tasks other than to be obedient, to ride, to sew, and perhaps to learn reading and writing.”1 By definition, a southern belle is a beautiful upper-class lady from the south.2 The southern belle stereotype is exemplified in many literary portrayals of upper-class southern women of the 19th century, such as that of Scarlett O’Hara in “Gone With the Wind.”

In Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, the line that reads, “These dead shall not have died in vain” describes the Civil War the greatest, and reveals the influential meaning behind his whole speech. This powerful fragment taken from Lincoln depicts the Civil War by saying that the Union and Confederate’s losses were creating a new future for the United States. Soldiers on both sides were fighting for what they believed was the best for their country, and that their sacrifices were the reason America was able to reorganize and unite as one again.
In the poem “America” penned by Claude McKay in 1921, the speaker explains that even though America seems to be sucking the life out of him, and hates him, he still loves the country as it plunges itself towards certain death. The 1920’s were a very exciting time but also full of struggles. The recent invention of the automobile and subsequent lack of paved roads are a good example of an excitement and struggle, these struggles and excitements could help us determine the meaning of McKay’s interpretation of America. He sites many examples and gives his thoughts about American society, like how it treats its citizens, how it acts, and its dismal future. When faced with the countless problems of war including death, disease, sorrow, and loss, soldiers develop and intense bond between one another as they seek support in one another. A brotherhood is formed among these soldiers who rely on one another for protection and companionship amid a time in their lives where they are faced with the constant threat of death and violence everyday of their lives. But what happens to them after the war?
