This short story begins with the famous opening, once upon a time, which foreshadows that the story line will be similar to a fairy tale. It raises expectations for the story that all will be magical and end happily. A typical modern-day fairy tale is that of a distressed character who overcomes an obstacle, falls in love with prince charming, and they ride off into the sunset; living happily ever after never to be heard from again. Godwin however, puts an unexpected twist on “A Sorrowful Woman”. This short story is a tale about what can happen when everyday roles take over our identity. Women should be at one with their being and be able to speak on social and psychic truths. Chaucer is an author that goes against what would be considered normal for this time period. He attempts to write as a female to represent a female perspective and enter into debate about the role of a woman. Stated in the text, “We can argue straightforwardly that women were marginalized and subordinate, that women lived and suffered under patriarchy.”(Treacher133). Women were viewed as being inferior. Are we to believe and follow the views created by men and for men? Chaucer is a man who creates a story told by a woman for woman and men. He seeks to show that women can speak up and does not need approval by men, “But that the Queen and other ladies as well implored the King to exercise his grace, so ceaselessly, he gave the Queen the case and granted her his life, and she could choose whether to show him mercy or refuse.” (Chaucer157). In the example, the King and the Queen represents at a higher power how a male and female is to be equal. It is shown that the Queen’s opinion and a woman’s opinion in general are just as important and purposeful as the King’s opinion. Chaucer uses the scenario of two powerful authority figures, the King and Queen, as an example for others to follow. Throughout history, gender roles have been an important barrier in society. Women are forced to satisfy expectations established by men and society. “My Last Duchess,” by Robert Browning, focuses on the powerful Duke establishing certain expectations of the Duchess, and attempting to control her. Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, concentrates on Laertes establishing certain expectations of Ophelia, and seeking to control her. A Room of One’s Own, by Virginia Woolf, centers on societal expectations of Judith, and her father trying to control her. In all three texts, men have the ability to control women and have the freedom to do as they please. Women must conform to the expectations of faithfulness, attentiveness, and chastity.

Initially, Collins demonstrates how one can weigh a dog’s weight with his method. Concrete diction in the first stanza, such as, “ small bathroom”, “ balancing”, and “shaky” suggest the uncomfortable nature of his intimate relationship with his pet. Although Collin is unappreciated for the gritty toil determination, he praise himself to applauded that “this is the way” and raising his self-esteem by comparing how easier it is than to train his dog obesity. In addition, the negative diction used to describe Collin holding his dog to be “awkward” for him and “bewildering” for his pet. This establish he rather force love rather willing show patience. When holding a pet on scale, there is less hustle because he secures the dog’s position by carrying it. Where as when he orders the dog to stay on the weighing scale with a cookie, his dog only followed him because of the expected reward.

In "My Last Duchess", by Robert Browning, the character of Duke is portrayed as having controlling, jealous, and arrogant traits. These traits are not all mentioned verbally, but mainly through his actions. In the beginning of the poem the painting of the Dukes wife is introduced to us: "That's my last Duchess painted on the wall,/ looking as of she were still alive" (1-2). These lines leave us with the suspicion that the Duchess is no longer alive, but at this point were are not totally sure. In this essay I will discuss the Dukes controlling, jealous and arrogant traits he possesses through out the poem.

This woman is obviously a low class worker,That probably has financial issues. This also relates to the use of uneducated diction, and Katherine Hows Machan doesn't use any unnecessary words to convey her theme. This particular poem ridicules love with its humorous tone. It's told through the eyes of a janitor in a public bathroom, and it portrays the traditional "Princess and the Frog" story as ridiculous and gross.

In the film, Chaucer is portrayed as a penniless, gambling poet. However, there is no tangible evidence that the real Chaucer was a gambler, though he did suffer financial hardship throughout certain periods of his life. Nevertheless, Paul Bettany’s characterization of Chaucer certainly provides both a pleasant portion of comic relief and recognition of the era’s most popular literature. Throughout the movie, Bettany's Chaucer makes references to his literary and poetic works, including "The Book of the Duchess" and "The Canterbury Tales." Certain elements in A Knight’s Tale are particularly reflective of Chaucer’s works. For example, the movie’s title seems as if it could have come directly out of "The Canterbury Tales." In Robert Browning’s “My Last Duchess,” a servant of a man named the Count is coming to see a duke to arrange a marriage between the Count’s daughter and the duke. During the meeting, the duke reminisces about his late wife, the duchess. When discussing the late duchess, the duke talks about how the duchess was unfaithful to him with men who gave her gifts. However, the duke subtly gives hints that he is not the best spouse. He is an intimidating man, and he thinks of himself superior to everyone, including his wife.

Also he is the one who is expected to "gain the hand"; however the poet suggest that love betrays: " he'll leave you". thus implying that love cannot build up a relationship, forexample, marriage. But all it can do is to trap someone into endless sorrow amd pain.

"The Book of the Duchess" was written as an elegy, honoring and celebrating Lady Blanche. In Chaucer's elegy, the Black Knight represents John of Gaunt, while the White Lady represents Lady Blanche. In the deeper meaning of the poem the lovers are married, not in an extramarital relationship. This does not follow the traditional pattern of the courtly love romance. Chaucer strays from the traditional role of the courtly love romance to make the point that marriage is a sacred thing. John of Gaunt truly loved his wife. There is no happy ending to the poem. In the elegy, Chaucer does not try to comfort John of Gaunt. Rather, he honors Lady Blanche, providing a sense of immortality and remembrance through his poetry

The title of the poem “My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun” suggests that the speaker is not in love with his ‘mistress’. However, this is not the case. Shakespeare uses figurative language by using criticizing hyperboles to mock the traditional love sonnet. Thus, showing not only that the ideal woman is not always a ‘goddess’, but mocking the way others write about love. Shakespeare proves that love can be written about and accomplished without the artificial and exuberant. The speaker’s tone is ironic, sarcastic, and comical turning the traditional conceit around using satire. The traditional iambic pentameter rhyming scheme of the sonnet makes the diction fall into place as relaxed, truthful, and with elegance in the easy flowing verse. In turn, making this sonnet one of parody and real love.
