The events in the book may be very interesting, or exciting, but without the universal connection to human, they will not grab our attention in any real way. A novel of Magaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale, is highly considered as a stimulating work of feminist dystopian fiction that examines the themes of fertility, rebellion, manipulation of power and love. The phrase “Give me children, or else I die” was originally based on the Genesis 30:1-3 when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister, and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die. It does not only mean that the barren mother will feel wretched but also means that if the Handmaid cannot get pregnant, she will die. When a Handmaid is pregnant, she is adored by her peers and by the Wives. After the baby is born, it is given to the wife of her Commander, and she is nominated to another house. The Handmaid 's reward for conceiving is that she will never be sent to the Colonies, even if she does not bear children again. In this society women have no responsibilities other than giving birth to children, which takes away many of their fundamental rights. In most cases, the capacity of having babies is the only thing that can provide women some peace and serenity. The Handmaids start every conversation with the greeting “Blessed be the fruit”. This phrase is a stylized greeting of the Handmaids directs to “the fruit of the womb” which means children and the hope to get pregnant. It is based on Deuteronomy 28:53 where God blessed Adam and Eve and said “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth”.
