Higgins: America’s Transportation To A Brighter Future Towards the end of the 1930s, the United States government was preparing itself to progress from one despondency to another. Because the Great Depression was nearing its final months and the threat of becoming involved in the European war continuously intensified, it was decided that substantial amounts of energy, along with an ascending budget, was to be focused on developing military boats that could haul soldiers from ships to open beaches. In New Orleans, Andrew Jackson Higgins was known for manufacturing Eureka Boats, or shallow-watercrafts that assisted in the exploration of oil and gas throughout the Louisiana bayous. After many failed attempts Higgins was able to adapt his design …show more content…
Andrew Higgins was able to bestow among the American public, along with citizens and leaders from other nations, that the American Dream was possible, no matter one’s background. Raised in Columbus, then Omaha, Higgins had an interesting character. Known as an intelligent entrepreneur, he also had a reputation as a troublesome child; he was eventually expelled out of four schools and he never graduated high school. After serving a term in the Nebraska Army Guard, Higgins traveled to the Gulf Coast in the 1920s, where he eventually started a lumber business in New Orleans(Tobias). However, his work required boats in order to receive wood out of shallow water areas and swamps, thus the creation of Higgins Boats, which would eventually grow into Higgins Industries. One can conclude that Higgins never received a degree in engineering, therefore he might not been the smartest boy on the block, some may say he was even a dreamer, but he forced his intricate ideas to become reality with the help of engineers and architects. that did not stop him from growing Higgins Industries to the empire it became. For the public to be able to view Higgins’s success was imperative at the time because it provided a ray of light in the dark cave many entrepreneurs were stuck in. Higgins Industries’s achievement allowed for America to push towards an era of prosperity. As for leaders in other countries, they began to fear Higgins because of the inspiration he was. “Even Hitler knew of Higgins, calling him the New Noah (Hiatt).” He, along with the rest of the world, feared that Higgins would create a domino effect, causing the United States to become an even stronger leading world power, therefore causing Europe's leading powers to
Peter Elbow’s essay centers on different ways to examine claims in life. Specifically, Elbow describes two different methods, or “games,” to examine claims: the doubting game and the believing game.
While many obstacles get in the way of friendship, true friendship still lives, even in silence. In the book, The Chosen , By Chaim Potok, two boys, Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders, who are very religiously different and both raised in completely opposite ways, develops a deep friendship. Their friendship opens up their worldview to many other different viewpoints in life. The friendship between these two boys is one with great religious significance, starting off with destiny and Gods will. As Danny and Reuven’s Friendship develops, it teaches them to respond wisely to the values of the more complex and secular world. It also teaches the true value of friendship. Because Danny’s father, Reb
Throughout history, there are moments that become pivotal points for major outcomes. The capturing and hanging of John Andre was one of these pivotal moments. A British Major who spied on the Americans and tried to close off the New England from the rest of the colonies, Andre was a man willing to do anything for his country.
Bruce Dawe, an Australian known poet, born 1930 is still one of the biggest selling and most highly regarded poets of Australia. His ability to write such influential poems has made an impact on a number of people, as each poem can be related to the ordinary living lives of Australians throughout the years. Bruce Dawe's poems are interesting because they comment on the lives of ordinary people. This statement is agreed on. In relation to the statement, three key poems can be linked being Enter Without So Much as Knocking (1959), Homo Suburbiensis (1964) and Drifters (1968).
As I was saying before, the presence of Ethan in Starkfield for the whole of his life has added to his plight. The metaphor is showing how the residents of

Dissolved oxygen is oxygen that is trapped in a fluid, such as water. Since many living organism requires oxygen to survive, it is a necessary component of water systems such as streams, lakes and rivers in order to support aquatic life. The dissolved oxygen is measured in units of parts per million (ppm). Examine the data in Table 4 showing the amount of dissolved oxygen present and the number of fish observed in the body of water the sample was taken from; finally, answer the questions below.
It's the 1800s and industrialization is thriving throughout America. People are moving away from an agricultural way of life, moving into cities, developing arts and trades and trying to expand their boundaries of who, where and how they can trade marketable items. In trying to reach more and more customers at further and further distances the ability to travel further in less time creates a demand. In this time period most of the trade routes revolved around rivers as this was the easiest method of transportation and the mighty Mississippi being the largest trade route. However, the problem with traveling the Mississippi or any riverway at this time is that you are at the mercy of the wind and currents. At this time you travelled by boat with full sail and could not maneuver against tides or a poor wind. There was a need to create something that could deal with this dilemma. More and more inventions and machines are being created. With these inventions it becomes effortless to complete painstaking tasks. The effect of this is tade becoming more
As with playing the “What If” game (asking “what if” incessantly to explore each aspect of a situation), so did a chain of events occur that caused this relationship to form.
For my presentation, I would like to present a president not known much in this time and age but one who, in 1880, made drastic changes to the American government. This man was Chester A. Arthur. The following material is what I have learned in American Government for only but one year, I have still learned more than what I already knew at the beginning of my high school career. I have gained a better understanding of the American political system as well as the history of the system. The second is that I can now put everyday events that happen and see how they correlate to the political system which affects everyday life. The last fundamental that I learned was how to do research.
Francis Howard Greenway was born on the 20 November 1777 and lived near Bristol, England. He was an only child and lived with his mother and father.
Born on November 25, 1835, in Dunfermline, Scotland, Andrew Carnegie started his life in the United States working at a telegraph office. During his time in the work of telegraphs, he started his life of going from poor and low class to rich and high class (known as “rags to riches”). In the 1860’s carnegie began investing into many things finding great outcomes in return. In the 1870’s he began his work with steel. By consulting with, leading steel producer in Great Britain, Henry Bessemer he was able to learn how to manufacture high quality steel that would require the least amount of money for production (McGuire, William, and Leslie Wheeler). He created the Carnegie Steel Corporation soon to become one of the wealthiest men in America in the 19th century. Because of his company and steel production, Carnegie brought the United States up as the leading steel producer, exceeding Great Britain (McGuire, William, and Leslie Wheeler). His company completely changed the way steel was produced in America by providing a easier, quicker, and more effective way of
While reading the poems “Richard Cory” and “Ezra Farmer”, it is almost immediately evident which poem is an original and which is a parody. Both poems are clearly about men that are popular among those he meets, but once the reader looks beneath the surface, they notice how the diction plays an important role in relaying the theme to the audience it is presented to. In the poem “Richard Cory” written by Edwin Arlington Robinson, the theme being portrayed is that people are not always as how they seem.
Gary (Sherman) Snyder was born in San Francisco on May 8 in 1930 to the parents of Harold Alton and Lois (Wilkie) Snyder. When Gary Snyder was growing up, he lived in west part of the United States surrounded by nature. While he was living there, the destruction of the Pacific Northwestern forests began, even at such a young age it still caused him sorrow (“Gary Snyder”). While growing up in such a rural area, where Snyder had a farm with chickens and cows and even an outhouse as a bathroom; he thought that this was just another way of living. Gary Snyder is okay with living in the city as well, even though he prefers living in a highly rural area (Martin). He started to examine and appreciate the American Indian culture around him.
