Annotated Bibliography: Genetically Modified Food
In this research project, the question that initially guided my ideas was “How safe are Genetically Modified Organisms?" Beyond further investigation of the topic, I took the route of GM Feed to assess the animals that are being prepared for our consumption. Therefore whether there is some sort of GM contamination in the body of the animals with a GM diet, it allows me to make my own stance on the potential risks and safety of GMOs for animals and humans. With conductive research on scholarly articles and journals that investigate the study of animals fed GM Crops, I plan to explain to my audience that GM foods have more benefits

Arvanitoyannis and "Safety Assessment and Countermeasures of Genetically Modified Foods," by Bin Du and Feng-Mei Zhu. With the two sources, I will provide the necessary information my audience needs to understand the health risks behind GM food along with the potential ways to counteract GM food, such as labeling before I attempt to present my claim to my audience. Lastly, in a source by Hiyam Al-Rousan, et al., will provide information that GM food is everywhere. Although we can pass a law to label GMOs, it would still be possible GM toxins and chemicals would still exist in label non-GM produce without a proper monitoring policy that checks if the labels on food are correct. All the sources will give more reason to why my audience should believe my claim and to continue …show more content…
Sieradzki, et al.. In the article, authors investigate the possibility of DNA Fragments within the digestive tract after the consumption of popular GM Soy and Maize, RR Soy and MON810 respectively. I will then refute with a source by Qingfeng Guan, et al., which argues DNA Fragments will degrade not only over time, but under high temperature and pressure. In addition to the article by Qingfeng Guan, et al., a source by Flachowsky, G., et al. examples the possible nutritional improvements that GM crops have to offer. The use of the article by Deb, R., et al, will also be used as the backing for my claim. Information that will be provided from the source will disprove my claim by examining the dangers in GM Food specifically the mycotoxins, or mold entering the consumer’s body. Authors also formed a rebuttal by foreseeing improvement to GM crops in the future, which then the article by G. Flachowsky can also support by adding the apparent improvement between first generation and second generation
GM foods are in the middle of many controversial issues; primarily these are addressed by conflicts over the relative pros and cons of GM foods. Major biotech companies like ‘Monsanto ' and ‘Cargill ' are promoting GM foods by focusing only on their beneficial aspects, giving least importance to their negative effects on safety, environment and biodiversity. On the other hand, governmental regulators and nongovernmental organizations, along with some scientists, are strictly opposing this type of blind promotion of GM food by enlightening the people on their negative effects The controversies associated with GM foods include issues such as safety, environmental benefits and risks, biodiversity, and ethical and social considerations.GM foods are implicated for adverse human health risks like people being allergic to it, environmental hazards such as development of super weeds, and pesticide and antibiotic resistance in disease causing organisms. On the other
One may argue that GMOS are not safe, but they are almost inevitable in our everyday consumption. In order to support this argument a person must prove that our bodies are showing signs of rejecting genetically modified organisms and specific diseases are linked back to GMO food consumption. According to the Non- GMO
This article examines how Genetically Modified food is unsafe for the people's health. This article talks about how by consuming GM foods can give you health problems and why it does ( gives you specific examples in the article). The good thing about this article is that it gives you information why GM foods are not safe and also gives you data about why is it unsafe for someone's health. The usefulness of this source for answering my research paper is that it helps by giving me data to actually prove why GMO labeling is necessary for food products. The bias this source is towards my argument. This source helps me answer my research question by explaining the negative side effects of GM foods, showing that just because a label has a GMO label
Introduction/Thesis Genetically modified organisms (GMO) are an organism whose genome has been engineered in the laboratory in order to favor the expression of desired physiological traits or the production of desired biological products according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. In grocery stores in the United States, as much as 70 percent of the processed food may contain genetically modified organisms. The same cannot be said for the European Union, who has much tighter regulations regarding the planting and end use of genetically modified (GM) foods. There is a worldwide debate over the safety and benefit of genetically modified organisms and whether they should be allowed on the dinner table.
One of the, if not thee, most controversial topics within the scientific world and the food industry is the use of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, in everyday food. The fear of the unknown is what has resulted in a lot of discrepancies for consumers worldwide. It has resulted in activists (see The Non-GMO Project) making waves; expressing their concerns to the public and getting governmental attention worldwide. It is important to know the difference between facts and speculation when analyzing the pros and cons of consuming modified foods.
Desired Response: As a result of my speech, my audience will be able to view GMOs in a
There are many myths that surround the genetically modified (GM) crops and food. Are they just a mere myth or it is the truth that has been shunned from public discussion? I believed that, there are some misconceptions and truths upholding the myths with the evidences from great studies conducted by researchers all over the world. From the book GMO: Myth and Truth the second edition by Antoniou and his colleagues (2012), the arguments are adapted to discuss the topic. In this article, the issues that would be discussed involves genetic engineering technique, health hazard of GM food, impacts of GM crops on farms and environment, health hazard of Roundup Ready crops and also feeding the world. These are the main arguments
With the increased amount of publicity, genetically modified organisms have recently been under harsh scrutiny and criticism. Consumers around the world are concerned whether or not consuming these newly modified organisms have any long term or short term health effects. “An exhaustive new study by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, found “no substantiated evidence of a difference in risks to human health between current commercially available genetically engineered (GE) crops and conventionally bred crops,”(Hall). This experiment showed that there are no alarming effects for consumers to worry about when consuming genetically modified crops. Genetically modified crops have been consumed for over twenty years now without causing any increase in health problem in the populations that consume them. These products are some of the most tested and safest agriculture products out there today. All of the testing done on genetically modified crops and their safety is monitored by the Department of Agriculture, the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA), and the Food and Drug Administration(FDA). Across the board with so many different agencies committed to reviewing testing of GMOs these products and organisms are undoubtedly safe
There is a lot of controversy has occurred with the arrival of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), especially the production, consumption, and sale. Many people are concerned, or not convinced, that the consumption of GMO foods by humans may or may not create health risks. Would you ever think of eating genetically modified food in your daily meal? If you 're like most people, you 'll be puzzled to know that most fast food places like McDonalds and Burger King, and even your local grocery market have bioengineered food which are genetically modified. While some may see GMOs as controversial, there are some advantages with having higher expected crop yields and feeding more countries with this type of food. The disadvantages have been debatable by many people on whether or not GMO foods are safe for human consumption and has been a dynamic topic for quite some time.
There is much controversy when discussing the topic of Genetically Modified Organisms. Whether it may concern moral or ethical factors, there always seems to be considerable arguments either defending or arguing against GMOs. Based on research, GMOs prove to be extremely present in our food supply worldwide. Chemical engineering, fertilization, as well as other methods of manufacturing come into question when formulating an opinion on GMOs. Due to the manipulation of biotechnology that effectively yields products like GMOs, the public is not only susceptible to whatever side effects that may come with chemically altered produce but also the mind boggling conscience of consuming food that isn’t necessarily “all natural” or “natural”.
Nowadays, following a high- level economic growth, food safety has become more and more important in personal daily life, even it is a stable element for every country. How people choose the safety food from market has become more satisfied for the public, especially when people face on the multiple types of food. In recently years, GMOs food was constantly in the media spotlight. Because GMO is a new stuff, is an unknown food, and people have no acknowledge on it, that is why Genetically modified (GM) foods are inherently unsafe, and current safety assessments are not competent to protect us from or even identify most dangers. There are three reason why people avoid GMO food in to our daily life: overused herbicide,
In today’s society citizens are faced with the question and decision whether or not GMO foods are beneficial or harmful to their health and well-being. Genetically modified foods (GMO) can be defined as organisms in which the genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating or natural recombination. (Food and Drug Administration, 2014) The technology behind GMO foods is often called “gene technology”, “modern biotechnology”, “recombinant DNA technology”, or “genetic engineering”. GMO foods were developed for many reasons which include: to grow a crop with pest resistant traits, to improve nutritional content, and extend their shelf life.
Americans deserve to know what they are consuming and they do not want to involuntarily be a part of the ongoing experiment for the side effects of eating or drinking genetically modified organisms. There are currently 61 countries that already label genetically modified organisms, GMOs, and these countries make up over 40% of the world’s population (Kingston). However, GMO labeling is not required in the U.S. Although a recent survey found that 92% of Americans want GMOs to be labeled on their food and drinks, the federal government refuses to establish food labeling laws (“Where GMOs Hide In Your Food”). A genetically modified, or genetically engineered,
Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are plants and animals that have been genetically altered using DNA from bacteria, viruses, or other plants and animals. With the many possible benefits of producing GMOs, there are also many possible detriments; thus, the topic is extremely controversial. As of 2013, 26 countries have banned GMOs. On the other hand, 28 countries have commercialized them and another 21 have granted approval for them. One problem the production of GMOs poses is that in the absence of mandatory labeling, people are unaware if their food is genetically modified and therefore cannot make informed decisions on which products to purchase. Those who support GMOs insist that the risks are not scientifically
But that doesn’t mean that genetically modified foods are safe either. Furthermore,“Just because there’s no clear link that GMOs cause harm in humans doesn’t mean they’re safe.” (Miller,3) Like smoking in the 1950’s, the effects of smoking were unkown. Will we have to wait 50 years to find the adverse effects of GMOs? Genetically modified foods may also provoke new protiens, “causing new allergic reactions to the human body” (Kantor, 13) Consumers should be aware of what they are eating and how it might effect them.
