1. Based on your reading of the two primary source documents for this module, in what ways do you feel these documents are historically significant? In what ways do documents such as these help historians to understand history? In the end, what were the main reasons for dropping these two weapons on Japan?
The documents make it easier for historians to understand the atmosphere of the time period. There are few reasons for dropping the atomic bombs. An invasion to mainland Japan was estimated to cost millions of American lives, which was far more than the losses from bombing. The bombing would give American an upper hand when negotiating conditions. The bomb was also seen as a way to show Russia the power of the United States.

In 1596- Abraham Ortelius took note that the coastlines of the continents seemed to be too fitting together. He initiated a theory that stated that the continents were probably joined at one point in time and were torn apart between Europe and Africa. In the year of 1912, Alfred Wegener stated that the continents were once joined in a supercontinent called Pangea.
As the classical period emerged, religion as well as other cultural influences had been some of the main aspects of much of how history was shaped during this time period. Many religions had sprung up during this time period such as Judaism, which was a monotheistic religion and had developed with the codification of the Hebrew scriptures. This religion reflected the cultures of different regions such as Mesopotamia. The Jewish states were conquered by the Babylonians, Assyrians, and the Romans during this time period as well. Another religion important to this time period is the Vedic religion Hinduism, which had originated in India. This religion was
The atomic bombs were dropped with purpose of solving diplomatic reasons and to inevitably make Japan surrender. The diplomatic goals the US had at the time was to prevent Russia from joining the war against Japan, but the US wanted to win the war before the USSR joined in order to prevent Stalin from claiming land in Japan and spreading communist influence throughout Asia. So in order to impede the potential spread of Russian influence and communism in postwar Japan, the US had to end the war as soon as possible or else the potential spread of Stalin and the Soviet Union’s influence might bring forth more devastating and graver consequences for the future of the US. The atomic bomb was a diplomatic and intimidating way of keeping the Soviet
Although WW II ended over 50 years ago there is still much discussion as to the events which ended the War in the Pacific. The primary event which historians attribute to this end are the use of atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Although the bombing of these cities did force the Japanese to surrender, many people today ask "Was the use of the atomic bomb necessary to end the war?" and more importantly "Why was the decision to use the bomb made?" Ronald Takaki examines these questions in his book Hiroshima.
1) According to Jared Diamond, the factor that allowed Europeans to develop the forces necessary to conquer vast portions of the world was the geography of the land Europeans lived on.
Some of the values of the culture I visited were the religious values. They were all Christians and most of them were from different parts of Africa. They believe in god and believe that he was the king of the universe, I could tell by the way they sing and the way they participated. They also believe in Jesus, based on how they had the statue of Jesus in the center of the church. They also saw each other as a community, as a church. They all looked really united and even though many of them didn’t knew each other they great each other like they did, because that probably might be a norm for them.
Ancient civilizations, specifically Greek and Roman civilizations, played various significant roles throughout the main civilizations in the Common Era. Byzantine Empire was the Eastern Roman from the Ancient civilization since the Roman emperor Constantine moved the capital from Rome to Byzantium and changed its name to Constantinople, known as the center city of Christian world. The political identity of Byzantine Empire can be traced back to one of the Imperial Rome. The empire had one emperor who made all decisions in the empire. The member of senate was appointed by the Emperor to be the figure-head. However, during Justinian’s reign, he tried to revise the Roman Law code and summarized all laws so that the court can refer to. Some of the architecture style during that time was resemble to the Roman architecture. For example, The Hague Sophia was the combination of longitudinal shape of the Roman basilica with a domed central plan. Regarding the infusion of the Greek culture, it could be easily seen by looking
In Chapter 16, absolutism and constitutionalism is broadly discussed on how it was used around the world. Absolutism is a form of government where monarch sole and uncontestable power over the state and all of their subjects. This form of rule was used all throughout Eastern Europe. In Russia, the Mongols forced the Slavic princes to accept their rule and give them anything they desired such as tributes and slaves. The Mongols were under the two hundred year rule of Mongol khan because of the former territories of Kievan Rus. Kievan Rus was medieval state that was centered in a city known as Kiev and part of modern day Ukraine. The princes of Moscow emerged as hereditarily great during this time and somwhere around 1480 Ivan III felt that
How were the needs for water and economic structures in some of the earliest of world’s civilizations cities and states met around 3100 BCE-100 CE and how did they get there? The cities and states back then depended on working waterways and architectural growth in order for their population to thrive. The larger the population, the greater the need for more easily and readily available water. When we think of a large population, we often think of the word civilization and if they had certain traditions that may have been passed down. Some of the first known civilizations were that of ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt which were located along the well-known Nile, Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. They had traditions just like any other culture, but the Mesopotamians wrote them down allowing historians a glimpse into their culture and their need for water. By looking at these civilizations today, we can talk about the political and economic factors of how water supplies were regulated around Mesopotamia and
There was also the question of time. The atomic bomb was by far the quickest way that America could see for the ending of the war, and they were eager to end the war as before long, Russia would become involved making a heavier casualty rate inevitable. America were also a very powerful country now they had the development of the Atomic Bomb, it would have been a waste to not be able to show their true power and the true destruction they could use through the bomb. There is also the point that the Americans were looking for revenge against the Japanese, as they had injured and killed many American soldiers, and even more to come, had the Americans not taken quick action.
Japan refused to reply to the Potsdam Declaration listing the conditions for the Japanese to surrender, so U.S. President Truman felt forced to use a bomb, because he felt the U.S. military was unable to win the war without using a bomb. It’s also believed that when the USSR entered the war Japan was almost certain not to surrender and the bomb was the only way to bring the war to an end quickly. The U.S. also felt that they were attacked from behind when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor killing more than 2,000 Americans, destroying twelve of America battleships and causing damage to nine other battleships
The military use of atomic bombs and the justification for America doing so is a highly controversial topic. On August 6th, 1945, America dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, and changed the world forever. Three days later America dropped another atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Nagasaki. During that week, hundreds of thousands were affected as the atomic age dawned. The United States needed to use atomic bombs in order to end the Second World War effectively. There are several reasons for this, including the fact that the United States wanted to end the war as quickly as possible in order to save millions of Allied and Axis soldiers from dying during several more years of war, to save millions of dollars on many more years of war, to justify the cost, to impress the Soviets, and to bring to an end the aggressive tyranny of Japanese Imperialism.
The United states dropped the atomic bomb for many other reasons. For example” Operation Downfall was the proposed allied plan for the invasion of Japan near the end of ww2 ” (Wiki DownFall). This shows that the United States did have a plan to invade Japan. This is important because if the United States would've attacked they would of suffered heavy casualties. Another example is “ A study performed by physicist William Shockley for the staff of secretary of war henry Stimson estimated that the invasion of Japan would cost 1.7 million American casualties, including 400,000 - 800,000 fatalities, and five to ten million Japanese deaths” (Forbes). This is important because this shows That one of the reasons on why the U.S. did not invade Japan was
The justification for why the United States dropped the bomb was because they wanted to completely destroy Japan’s power. They wanted full control over the war and wanted to strip Japan of everything they had such as, “their docks, their factories and their communications”. With the atomic bomb the US achieved this. The atomic bomb provided a significant amount of power for the US. It set a precedent for what the US is capable of and the fact that this type of bomb was only used once shows the fear associated with it. It created a bad image for the US and they are now looked down upon because of their decision to use this bomb. The United States should not have used the atomic bomb on Japan because it went against all that they stood for
In studying the atomic bombings, orthodox historians and post-revisionists generally accept the view proposed by the Truman administration. This argument claims that the use of the atomic bombs against Japan was necessary on military grounds in order to prevent a costly invasion of the Japan, as well as in ending the war.
