The columbine shooting shocked the world and having the blame on video games was one of the reasons why these kids did this. In The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander is about a shocking statistic. That more African American men are in correctional facilities or on probation than were enslaved in the mid 1800s before the Civil war started. In the short story ‘a worn path’ by Eudora Welty she uses symbolism to describe many of the characters and objects that are given in the short story. Symbolism is to use symbols to represent ideas and qualities. In ‘a worn path’ Eudora does so she uses manifolds of characters and objects to express the way the story is being told in her own way. As doing so she helps the reader understand it more sufficiently and to show that what is going on is still happening today.

The Crux is more commonly known as the Southern Cross, its name being Latin for cross. Although it was seen by the Ancient Greeks, it was known to be part of the constellation Centaurus. The stars that make up the cross are: Alpha Crucis, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Epsilon. Quite a few of the constellation’s brighter stars are also members of the Centaurus / Scorpios association. The reason I chose this constellation is because of its significance to my country. Through captivating works, poets such as Langston Hughes, Edwin Arlington Robinson, Robert Frost, and E.E. Cummings expressed the struggles of life during the modern era. By examining what these poets have to say about dissatisfaction with life, feelings of inadequacy, and loneliness, it becomes clear that life during the modern era was full of hardships.

In a research conducted by Roberts and Blanton, they found out that the number of families in the U.S. having only child are getting higher compared to the past generations having many children. And they also discovered that this widely statistical change, draws many adversely thoughts and speculations about being an only child or having an only child through the research of Polit and Falbo (125). The main judgement is being isolated because of not having any companions at home with their age, like having siblings that they can relate to their lives. Some other negative things are about their personalities and characteristics, such as being a spoiled, selfish, aggressive, bossy, etc. and the list goes on. Furthermore, some of the only children commented that, “My life was more private than if I had siblings – I had my own room” and “I got most of the things that I wanted like band instruments and folks took me with them to Europe” (215). Aside from the advantages that every only children gets, the parents is also in favor of this because they only have one child to support and that will make them to spend less. Recollections of vivid autobiographical episodic memories formed when an individual experiences intense emotions, generating from a surprising public event defines Flashbulb memories (FBMs). Permanent and consistent remembrances processed cognitively and stored as explicit recollections in long term memory are additional features of FBMs (Goldstein, 2014). Brown & Kulik (1977) first proposed this phenomenon and argued FBMs are resistant to change like photographs. The ongoing debate over the process of cognition in relation to storing and recalling FBMs led numerous researchers to advance their understanding of the mental processing of FBMs and to evaluate the impact emotions have on memories. This paper discusses the pioneer investigation and findings from Brown & Kulik’s 1977. It further explores debates opposing their unique theory of FBMs and the apparent inadequacies of their conclusions. Additionally, this paper examines plausible hypotheses from researchers for the formation of FBMs like rehearsal of events and the inconsistencies of FBMs, their distortions and the decay FBMs experience over time. It then evaluates a contemporary study on FBMs and the necessity for future studies to develop a method to measure FBMs. This is imperative in order to gain a deeper understanding of the influences emotions have on shaping, processing and storing FBMs cognitively and consequently how it impacts on our daily lives.
