The causes of ageing population in Australia is multiple but can be summed up to three main
reasons: low fertility and rising life expectancy, a stronger post-war ‘baby boom’ and net
immigrations. As the rapid development of economy in recent decades, ageing population has
become a serious problem especially in developed countries. One significant reason for Australia
ageing population is that an increasing number of families prefer to have less babies than before.
Fertility refers to the number of births in the population to its relative size. Since 1976, the fertility
rate has been under replacement level in total in Australia, which means throughout a woman’s
reproductive life, her and her husband couldn’t be replaced by the insufficient

However, although baby boomers relieved the pressure
of labor and did contribution to the rapid development of economy, the generation reaches their
middle age now and become a significant part of the total population. In the future, as more of
them reaching to old age, they will aggravate the proceeding of ageing population in Australia.
Historically, immigration is a major part of Australia’s ageing population. Australia’s population
growth contains natural increase in Australia and net overseas immigration. Since 1945, millions
of immigrants have settled in Australia when the Australia’s first immigration department was set
up (Parliament of Australia, 2012). For the purpose to support the increasing number of old
Australians and the lack of workforce, Australia government are always welcoming immigrants
due to most of them are students and work-aged young people. In addition, the government carried
out immigration programs to attract immigrants. They drove the significantly increase of
Australia’s population growth. In the long term, this situation will continue for
There are many different problems that an ageing population creates for society. There are many reasons why there is an increase in the ageing population, as Item B states “In common with many western societies, the United Kingdom has an ageing population. Rising life expectancy and a relatively low birth rate have meant that the average age of the population is rising”. Also the decline in fertility has led to an increased amount of people who are over the age of 65 and this poses many different issues within society.
In 1901 just 4.0% of the Australian population were older people and after two decades this has increased to 6.4%. In 2011 the aged population continued to increase and reached 14%. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (Abs.gov.au, 2012) indicates that since the baby boomers are now becoming old, there has been a decrease in fertility rates and an increase in life expectancy. The population of people over 65 years has continued to increase and it is predicted that it will continue to increase for the next 50 years. As people become older they are more susceptible to becoming sick and in need of government benefits. Since there is a major
The information gathered has been quite consistent with the expectations had before having begun this research report. The ageing population has been a topic that has discussed on the radio, in newspapers and on the news and so there was a fundamental understanding of the changing demographic facing the Australian population, though there wasn't much of understanding of why this was happening. This issue is something that many countries around the world are facing so this also makes it well publicised. In the future, more time could have been used to explore past Australian census which could provide more vital information on Australia's past and present populations
There is no doubt that the ageing population is a subject which has attracted much attention of Governments and communities in the world. Even in Australia, it is considered as one of the most crucial challenges which will have to confront in the next 25 years ( Hugo, 2014). Population ageing is defined as a change in the age structure of a country toward older ages. This is the repercussion of many elements such as the declining fertility rate, baby boom period and advanced technology in medical and healthcare extending longevity. While a number of studies have been done into proving this trend having several negative effects, it can be argued that there are many beneficial impacts both on national economy and society. This essay aims to look at the positive influences of older population on the workforce, then the Australian Government Budget, and finally the community.
Research has shown that the Australian population is fast becoming an aging society. A huge proportion of older people accounting for this aging society were born overseas. According to Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2011, 36% of
In 2017, an estimated 3.8 million Australians (15% of the population) are aged 65 and over compared with 2.2 million (13%) in 2007. An ageing population leads to:-
The ageing of societies will have a dramatic impact on both economy and Federal budget. For example, the potential to increased pressure on Government expenditure, particularly on pensions and health care (Klein-Collins & Snyder, 2011). There is evidenced that older Australians are increasingly vulnerable to a higher risk of poverty, with 14.8% of people over the age of 65 living below the 50% poverty line (Australian Council of Social Service, 2014). Australia’s human rights obligations required governments to ensure that older people are protected from poverty by providing social security income (Australian Human Right Commission, 2012). Australian governments, at all levels provide support payments that reduce social exclusion (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2012). The age pension provides financial assistance and access to a range of concessions for eligible older Australian (Department of Human Services, n.d). The Age Pension is a fundamental part of Australia’s retirement income system and provides a safety net for those unable to fully support themselves in retirement (The Australian Government,
The aging population is one the most rapidly increasing issue across the nation today. According to demographic data, it has been gradually developing over the last two hundred years. It has become a factor in many countries. The aging population is a result of declining humanity, longevity, and decreasing fertility with fewer young people. As the population ages there will be a major strain on the budget of the government, because more health care service are being used by people of sixty-five than
The increased life expectancy in the modern society has resulted in a growing elderly population throughout the world (Tas et al, 2007, cited in Abolfazl et al, 2011). Australia is no exception, with a population of people aged 65 and over of 14.7% in 2014; and is expected to increase more rapidly in the following years as the ‘baby boomer’ generation reach this age group (Australian Demographic Statistics, Jun 2014). Therefore, it is important to dedicate studies to better understand this age group and develop strategies to promote the health, preventing or reducing disability in this population (Hirvensalo et al 2000, cited in Abolfazl et al, 2011).
Within a postmodern era, the fertility rates across the western countries have experienced a rapid decline. A transition from a relatively high to a relatively low fertility rate. Throughout the development in the society, there are many fundamental changes which cause the decrease in the fertility rate. This essay will discuss….
The argument surrounding the unemployment rate in Australia, in relevance to Australia’s optimum population level, has been often heavily debated; whether Australia has reached its optimum population remains particularly contestable. However the real issue for Australia has been in regards to the Labour force. Job availability has steeply declined over the last decade which has prompted the government to increase the migration intake, through the skilled migrants system, to provide companies and industries with the labour force that they require. According to Stimulus A, the increase and peak in the skilled migration and into Australia from late 2009 would indicate the government pushing for skilled migrants into Australia. Due to the
Both Australia and Japan face the challenge of an ageing population. Discuss some of the specific strategies each country is debating and employing to address this issue.
The ageing population in Australia have shown a larger increase in proportion in those aged 65 years and over from 11.8% to 14.7% and predicted to increase more rapidly over the next few years according to Australian Bureau of Statistic (2014). By the end of June 2014, there is a significant increase in people aged 85 years and over by 4.4% where females have twice the population of male and have much higher life expectancy. The number of individuals that ages 85 and over has also increased to 456,600 in 2014 over the past two decades and expected to reach 1.9 million by 2064 (Australian institute of Health and Welfare, 2016).
Australia and Japan are very different countries, in food, culture, location, population and many other aspects. But one of the things that brings these two very different countries together is the issue of an ageing population. It is estimated that, with a rapidly increasing elderly population, Japan is well on its way to lose about half its workforce by 2060, which would weaken its status as an economic superpower and weaken its economy to the point of ruin. Australia is also facing a similar ageing population crisis. Although in the past Australia was considered a rather young country, its ageing population has increased dramatically over the past few decades, which will put stress on the economy as well as taxpayers who fund retirement
From 2001, New South Wales population will have an increase of 37.7% for the next 50 years. Meaning, by 2050, the population will have gained by 2.5 million people to 8.4 through to 9.6 million. The median age will be around 40 and by 2050, the life expectancy for males will have increased to 88.0 years while females will have increased to 91.3 years.
