VASNHS Surgical Specialty Outpatient department has a designated pre-operative management unit that oversees the patients undergoing surgery. The predicaments stem from various guidelines or protocol originating from numerous surgeons and clinics. At present, the pre-operative nurses abide simple pre-op instructions (NPO protocol, medications, what to bring, during the surgery, transportation, cancellation instructions) for the entire Surgical Specialty Outpatient department. Surgical procedures are being canceled due to lack of communications and cancelations of patients prior to surgery date.

Campus is experiencing some "struggles" since the last Monitoring visit that took place six weeks ago. This position is located at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System in the Primary & Specialty Medicine Service Line, 3K Stepdown Unit. This is a 21 bed medical stepdown unit from ICU to acute medicine or surgery. This unit serves as an important component of the continuum of care in the Medical Center. The purpose of the unit is to provide nursing care to veterans experiencing acute medical/surgical problems; or patients requiring close 24/7 observation, skilled nursing care, cardiac monitoring, cardiac continuous cardiac IV medications, insulin drips, close respiratory monitoring and specialized procedures.

Competency begins with the doctor themselves. They are required to be knowledgeable and accredited in all aspects of their profession. There is also fail-safes that should be in place to ensure the medical provider is current on their credentialing and their on-going training. We do have an entity called the AMA (American Medical Association) that oversees that the medical provider has all their licenses and they are up to date. Unfortunately, there are some that slip through the cracks and are not caught until complaints have been filed against them.
