Belonging comes from an understanding, or the knowledge that an external sense of being comes from an internal sense of connection and safety. This critical analysis will portray how the text “Stolen” by Jane Harrison relates to the concept of belonging. Stolen is a play that tells the stories of 5 Aboriginal children that were stolen away from their families and were forced to grow up in institutions, following the European way of life. The children were segregated from their communities and treated as inferiorly. Their worth was seen as minimal and only useful to Europeans as slaves. “Stolen” is an example of not belonging to the environment that one is living in. It is a plea from the Aboriginal community for a brighter future. ‘Stolen’ raises many major issues in society such as racism and prejudice, abuse of power, loss of innocence and authority and control. The Aboriginal community was looked down upon by the European settlers. The Europeans saw the Aboriginals as inferior and incapable and saw it in their duty to bring the Aboriginals to a more ‘civilised’ way of life. They did this by forcibly removing children from their homes and placing many laws on the Aboriginals which caused them to turn to the European life style. This act of racism and prejudice is shown throughout the play. All children were stolen from their homes but Sandy shows the effect of the actual stealing in the most detail. The police are after him and he is forced to run from relative to relative to keep from being taken. He eventually looses the battle and is sent to the institution. Anne is also a strong example of this prejudice. She is sent to a ‘white home’ and when she finds out that she is an Aboriginal she is in shock. She does not know that she is an aboriginal. She feels betrayed and confused. She doesn’t know where she belongs and who her real family is. An example of the loss of innocence that the stolen generation received is the character of Ruby. She is a young girl and is sent out on the weekends
