Most likely the listeners and retellers of these types of these stories would have been warriors themselves, much like the typical characters in these tales often were. A warrior, as Beowulf certainly was. Beowulf is a great example of such an epic. Writings of epic style, had many characteristics in common such as heroes of superhuman strength and ability. These individuals would have been the greatest of all men in ability and intellect, possessed the undaunted love and admiration of those who would have followed him even into death and would have had many adventures of fearless cavalry against otherwise undefeatable foes. The goal of this essay is to expound and support how Beowulf is most certainly a writing of the epic style. In the Old English poem, “Beowulf”, one was shown valiance, bravery, and sacrifice. It is debatable on the fact if Beowulf in an epic poem, or not. After reading “Beowulf”, one can argue that it is an epic because of its characters, the way it’s written, and the story.
To qualify as an epic poem, Beowulf reflects the values of the culture in which it was created. The Anglo-Saxon culture and the poem share many of the same values. They shared a heroic ideal that included loyalty, strength, courage, courtesy, and generosity. Like all epic poems Beowulf is a long narrative work that tells the adventures of a great hero and also reflects the values of the society in which it was written. Both Beowulf and the Anglo-Saxons believed in those qualities as an individual.
During the Anglo-Saxon time period loyalty and bravery were necessary characteristics of a man. During this time period, where surviving was difficult only the strongest survived. Beowulf was one of the warriors that lived in this time period. Monsters, warring armies, dragons, and creatures of the sea made life perilous. Society was looking for an epic hero. Beowulf was the answer to society’s search. Strength, bravery, and the desire for glory were three qualities that make Beowulf an epic hero.
